"A grocery-store tulip flown across the world and wrapped in plastic. A crystal displayed in a rock shop. An animal pushed to the edges of human space. Pelt looks at the unnaturalness of things we accept as natural - and how our desire for connection with nature is shaped by systems of consumption."

Although Barrie's work is primarily photographic, her work resists the photograph as a flat, encased image. By incorporating dye-sublimation on aluminium, faux fur and other materials onto the image itself she creates nuance by transgressing boundaries–representation and reality, organic and inorganic, photographic and sculptural.

Pelt runs SEP 21 - OCT 20.

The Perspectives Gallery can be found on the second floor of @miadcollege, room 299, and is currently open during building hours, M-F. taken in Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design by @morganbarrie

"The binary of natural vs unnatural has broken down. We have accepted a polluted, strangled world as our new baseline, falling in love with some of its mutations and invaders in the process. Flowers from the other side of the world are expected to be wrapped in plastics in the grocery store, waiting for us regardless of the season. Other animals exist at the edges, mostly in spaces we don't want for ourselves.

These pieces are interested in the un-naturalness of things often taken for granted: a yellow tulip in the spring, a crystal in a rock shop. These things often make us feel more connected to “the natural world” even as they show our tendency to connect solely through capitalist means . We will let the animals keep their fur if we can buy a plastic version instead."

Pelt runs SEP 21 - OCT 20.

This show at @perspectivesgallerymiad is up for the next month. This weekend I got to see the show in person for the first time, hang out with other photographers & photo nerds, and eat a bunch of amazing vegan food. The show is open during MIAD’s regular building hours; if you’re in the area, check it out on the second floor! It was my first time visiting the campus and I got such a warm feeling from it, it seems like a really special place.

“Pelt” started in 2024, a photo-weirdo study of the fragile membranes that separate different kinds of living things. The first time I showed pieces of this series together, I was in the throes of lyme disease as I framed and stuffed the faux fur behind the images. The poetry of that was lost on me at the time—the separation between my body and the natural world was broken, the animality of being a human being briefly unavoidable (if this sounds romantic it shouldn’t—lyme disease is the worst).

I’m really touched by the job that @instagrantgill and his student workers did in installing it, especially with the “skin worms” (photo tex pieces showing my skin & paraffin wax) that are affixed to the gallery walls. Bringing a human element back into the post-natural spaces of the framed images feels both exciting and important. Thanks to @jonhorvath for inviting me to share my work and for allowing for this kind of experimentation. taken in Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design by @morganbarrie

Trying to squeeze some summer out of August. As someone who has never fully hopped off the academic calendar, this season always feels a little melancholy. Every unscheduled hour feels precious. Making images makes the time feel more open. First image is the shoot, second image is four days later. by @morganbarrie

This summer I took a workshop run by @justinekurland_studio @pamela_sneed and @shea_luh. It’s wrapping up soon, and I’m feeling really grateful for the space and encouragement to experiment and make images that took me by surprise.

Summer is tricky—it’s when I have the most freedom in terms of time and the most varied subjects in terms of plants/landscapes, but it’s also a period of relative isolation as a person with a young child. It’s easy to keep in my same creative rhythms/routines as the fastest way to make images during a nap or calm moment. It was amazing to be pushed out of that a bit by women I deeply respect—to break some of those patterns and make work that came more from the present.

As part of the workshop, we each got paired up with a partner, and I’m extremely lucky that mine was @sshalmiyev, an effortlessly cool woman and genuinely inspiring person who was also deeply encouraging when I needed some hand holding. (Go read her memoir Mother Winter, it is incredible and heart wrenching.)

I love and hate the feeling of being “at the beginning” of something, which is how I’m feeling today—I have dozens of ideas and am almost frustrated that I haven’t tried them all out yet. But that’s the whole joy of making things, too. This process has been a crucial reminder that the process of making things should be fun and joyful. If you have an excuse to work with any of these women, I think you should take it, but more broadly this is me remembering the importance of “starting over” even when it’s uncomfortable. by @morganbarrie

Rework of a piece from two years back, “Peonies,” this time printed as a dye sublimation on aluminum with different fur arrangement.

In Summer of 2024, I had a show @what_scf. I decided to show only new work and spent the six months leading up to it feverishly making new things. I can move too slowly and overwork things, so this push to just make something was really helpful.

I’ve since returned to some of these pieces, revising, shifting, pruning, but am so glad I got to capture some of those initial ideas while they were fresh.

In September I’ll send a lot of this work to the University of New Mexico’s Spectra Gallery. Reflecting and gathering has made me realize the first phase of this 3D photoculptural phase of my practice is ending, and I’m moving onto a very related but new way of thinking about this work. It’s exciting when that happens. by @morganbarrie

I’ve been sitting on these for a few months to see how they would age. At the start of the summer, I played around with using borax, sugar, and salt solutions to add crystals to faux fur. They seem to be aging surprisingly well, instead of adding today’s newspaper into the video with me you’ll have to trust my mid-semester tired vibe as proof. Thanks to my mom for loaning me the crystals, totally drawn to them aesthetically but don’t love how they’re often sourced in ethically dicey ways
