"A grocery-store tulip flown across the world and wrapped in plastic. A crystal displayed in a rock shop. An animal pushed to the edges of human space. Pelt looks at the unnaturalness of things we accept as natural - and how our desire for connection with nature is shaped by systems of consumption."

Although Barrie's work is primarily photographic, her work resists the photograph as a flat, encased image. By incorporating dye-sublimation on aluminium, faux fur and other materials onto the image itself she creates nuance by transgressing boundaries–representation and reality, organic and inorganic, photographic and sculptural.

Pelt runs SEP 21 - OCT 20.

"The binary of natural vs unnatural has broken down. We have accepted a polluted, strangled world as our new baseline, falling in love with some of its mutations and invaders in the process. Flowers from the other side of the world are expected to be wrapped in plastics in the grocery store, waiting for us regardless of the season. Other animals exist at the edges, mostly in spaces we don't want for ourselves.

These pieces are interested in the un-naturalness of things often taken for granted: a yellow tulip in the spring, a crystal in a rock shop. These things often make us feel more connected to “the natural world” even as they show our tendency to connect solely through capitalist means . We will let the animals keep their fur if we can buy a plastic version instead."

Pelt runs SEP 21 - OCT 20.

“Soñando Estados Unidos” is a body of work where Osorio interviewed multiple Latino business owners and workers asking questions that focused on their dreams or their reasons behind their sacrifice to be in the United States. The artist works with portraiture and text to reveal moments from their interviews as a way to bring light to these stories we may not have access to. Through movement and perspective Osorio encourages us to take time to engage with her community and listen. To read the interviews in depth you can check out Osorio’s website linked in her bio @aosorioart.16

Cultivando Identidad Y Hogar runs JUL 27 - SEP 11.

"In Latino cultures our home is more than a location. Home is our lineage and beliefs gifted to us from our motherland, and in my case El Salvador. In America home becomes a part of our identities as we honor our roots and our traditions."
- Ashley Osorio @aosorioart.16

Across three bodies of work, Osorio creates a bridge by highlighting their sense of home by documenting her family and her people, their daily lives and the sacrifices upon which these lives were founded. Through her work she explores themes of identity, heritage, community, the Immigrant experience and the American Dream.

Cultivando Identidad Y Hogar runs JUL 27 - SEP 11.

Through the use of photography I capture the connections created between people and their sense of home. In latino cultures our home is more than a location. Home is our lineage and beliefs gifted to us from our motherland, and in my case El Salvador.

In America home becomes part of our identities as we honor our roots and our traditions. I created three photographic bodies of work depicting the ways my family and our people incorporate cultural elements into their daily lives, how they have sacrificed themselves to provide for their loved ones, and the ways they recreate the history of their upbringings in order to feel the home they long for. My photographs serve as an homage to my heritage and community. I share their stories and experiences to represent the immigrant experience and provide a reflection of who we are and who we hope to be as we assimilate into American society searching for the American Dream. — Ashley Osorio @aosorioart.16

“I was recently visiting my hometown and stopped to fill up my car with gas. I noticed a woman sitting outside the gas station drinking coffee and recognized her as my old ballet teacher. I sat down next to her and we caught up. She had been going blind for a decade since I last saw her. She had fallen out of love, started growing a garden, and found god. She had a small collection of freshly picked mushrooms next to her and handed me one, saying “Mushrooms have no gender, did you know that?”

Named after David Arora’s mushroom identification guide, What The Rain Might Bring is a cross-disciplinary project that explores the complexities of storytelling, faith, folklore, and the inherent queerness of the natural world.” (D.H. , Artist Statement)

“Out-in-the-world image-making is a practice of displaying and withholding. Intermittently while making this, I was living within different religious communities—Mennonites, Mormons, Buddhists, Christian Monasteries, Shaker Villages, Pagans, and Utopic Communities in the Northeast. This led to thinking a lot about storytelling’s function in withholding and displaying… faith-based hiding.

In the edit and the sequence, the book starts during the day, goes to the night, and does that seven times. Every time it’s about to become day again, there’s a gatefold. There are hidden symbols all over this book that a reader probably wouldn’t or shouldn’t notice while flipping through it. The gatefolds are so tight that they’re hard to open—I like the idea of using these past things that I’ve been interested in as symbols in storytelling.

We all want to disappear, we all want to hide.” (Dylan Hausthor, Lenscratch Interview)

Works from @dylan.hausthor book “What the Rain Might Bring”, along with the original publication, can be found in the Perspectives Gallery JAN 28 - APR 10. “What The Rain Might Bring is a cross-disciplinary project that explores the complexities of storytelling, faith, folklore, and the inherent queerness of the natural world…

The often disregarded underbelly of a post-fact world seems to be the simultaneous beauty and danger of fiction. I’m interested in image-making as a process of hybridity—weavings of myth filled with tangents and nuances, treading the lines between investigative journalism, disinformation, performance, acts of obsession, and self-conscious manipulation…

By using modes of making that are traditionally linked to fact-finding, I hope for the viewers and readers of my work to find themselves in a space between fiction and reality—to push past questions of validity that form the base tradition of colonialism in storytelling and folklore and into a much more human sense of reality: faulted, broken, and real.” (D.H. , Artist Statement)

Images from “What the Rain Might Bring” by @dylan.hausthor are currently on view in the Perspectives Gallery– showcasing eerie scenes of surreal happenings which at the same time confront an ardent realism of somewhere.
