Contemporary photography gallery at the Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design

POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Some images from my first solo exhibition, Cultivando Identidad Y Hogar. This exhibition was such an honor to have had the opportunity to put together and show this summer. It is a combination of four photographic projects I created depicting the complexities of being an American while deeply rooted in my cultural background, as well as giving honor to my family, the Salvadoran diaspora, and Latino communities in America.

These photos were made with so much love, and I appreciate everyone who took the time to stop by the Perspectives Gallery to see them. There are currently 3 days left to go check it out, it is up until September 11th. The Perspectives Gallery can be found on the second floor of @miadcollege, room 299, and is currently open during building hours.

I’d also like to say how incredibly grateful I am to Grant Gill and Jon Horvath for giving me this opportunity and for all of their guidance and support the last couple of years. They both have been such a huge part of my journey as a photographer and I will forever be thankful that they both always believed in me.

The Perspectives Gallery @perspectivesgallerymiad will be collaborating with Alejandro Cartagena @alexcartagenamex for the final exhibition of Spring Semester. Their exhibition One Worried Woman and Fifteen Children features 16 images made within the parameters of the Kuleshov effect under the construction of presumptive narratives. In response students enrolled in Intermediate and Advanced Photography will be visually responding to the exhibition, connecting conceptual threads to their own aesthetic tendencies. These works will be finalized into books and presented at the New York Art Book Fair

At the beginning of the exhibition, Alejandro Cartagena @alexcartagenamex prompted collaboration with MIAD Intermediate and Advanced Photography students to interpret the premises of his exhibition. Fourteen books were created, each exploring similar themes that correlate with individual interests and aesthetic tendencies. These books are on view now in the exhibition and will also be presented by Cartagena at the NY Art Book Fair APR 25-28.

Worried Woman and Fifteen Children runs from APR 8 - MAY 22.

AN OBJECT OF THEIR OWN : Jessica Labatte, Nicole White, and Sarah Phyllis Smith & Douglas Degges
February 8 – March 12, 2020 “An Object of Their Own” constitutes a kind of photography that is driven by a symbiotic and inextricable connection between process and representation. The works in this exhibition depict the unique properties inherent to the photographic materials and apparatuses used in their making; simultaneously, they also depict the outward world that was composed before the lens. Each of the artists reconciles this duality in ways that encourage us to think about the photographic surface as a site for mark marking and gestural intervention.
