Last week’s Georgia State Mid-Am was a thrill to play in and these views of Lookout Mountain never got old.

A big shout out to the GSGA staff for setting up the championship, especially having to navigate an incoming hurricane and to the Lookout Mountain members and staff for hosting us. They had the course rocking and rolling and it was a true championship test!

And congrats to @sbehrjr for capturing the title on the second playoff hole after shooting a 66 in the final round!

Bandon Dunes Ranking # 01

After playing Bandon Trails for the first time in 2021, I was wondering to myself if I had over hyped the course but after playing it for a second and third time, I can confirm that it’s my favorite course on property and perhaps anywhere.

The course routing starts in the dunes, which are some of the most dramatic on property, then meanders through an open meadow area and then up into the magic of the Oregon forest returning back to the meadow and then finishing in the dunes on the 18th. All of these areas and the holes are linked by walking trails that add a sense of journey to the adventure.

Some of my favorite holes include the par three second, the drivable par four eight, number eleven that tumbles down to the only pond on property, number thirteen that has an incredible green site with a deep bunker to the right and fall off to the left, the iconic (and somewhat controversial) drivable par four fourteenth hole with the mountains in the distance, the fifteenth with one of the best green sites on property and the par three seventeenth, especially at sunset.

Bandon Dunes Ranking # 02

Pacific Dunes is always ranked as the best course on property and I can see why but I have it as my second favorite by the slimmest of margins.

Some of my favorite holes include the par five third hole with the green site benched on the dune above the ocean giving you the first real look at the ocean along with a preview of the iconic thirteenth hole, the short par four sixth hole, the green site on eight might be one of the best of property, the back to back par threes to start the back nine can’t get more scenic, the drivable par four sixteenth and the par three seventh with the massive dune covered in gorse behind the green makes for one of the better inland sites on the course.

Bandon Dunes Ranking # 03

This was the course I hadn’t played before and the one that probably gets the most mixed reviews but I thought it was fantastic in many ways. The holes playing over the main sand ridge like the iconic Sahara third hole with the famous ghost tree and initial reveal of the ocean might be one of the coolest hole anywhere or the Ocean hole seventh followed by the Biarritz eight. One of my favorites holes is the Alps sixteenth with an incredible green site perched between two large sand dunes.

Before playing, I thought the middle part of the routing through the “flat” areas might be a little mundane but these holes still have a lot of character and this is the place on the entire property that most represented true links. Walking from the Road hole to the Redan hole brought me back to the SE coast of England with the way the grasses and bunkering looked.

Doak and Urbina did a great job doing something a little different as the fourth main course built on property with the use of the iconic template holes and larger greens and the half way house overlooking the ocean had to be in the running for the best setting anywhere.
