Congratulations to Bethan Morgan-Williams! She is one of the recipients of the 2026 Composer Prizes.
Born in Wales, Bethan Morgan-Williams studied with Diderik Wagenaar at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague and with Gary Carpenter at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester. She has collaborated with the London Symphony Orchestra, Ensemble Musikfabrik, the Birmingham Contemporary Music Group, and violist Antoine Tamestit. Based in Wales, Morgan-Williams draws on the contrast between rural calm and urban intensity in her music, which features layered textures and complex rhythms, guiding listeners through carefully structured, multifaceted works.
The other two Composer Prizes go to Hovik Sardaryan and Kitty Xiao.

Morgan-Williams lebt zurückgezogen in Wales. Der Gegensatz zwischen ruraler Ruhe und urbaner Reizüberflutung ist Ausgangspunkt ihrer Werke, die mehrschichtig und rhythmisch komplex angelegt sind und die den Hörer stets durch verschiedene Landschaften zu führen scheint. Once the celebrations had concluded in Munich, Tom and I took the train to Zurich, where I had a piece performed by @cnz.ch. I had been looking forward to this journey, and Lake Constance did not disappoint! Nor did Zurich. What an incredible city.

We were lucky to have 30-degree sunshine, but Zurich really is stunning: Lake Zurich is crystal clear, and everyone we met was so friendly. We treated ourselves to cheese fondue, though – rather surprisingly – no chocolate was consumed.

It was an honour to work with CNZ, to meet Heinz Holliger and Isabel Mundry, and to experience Daniel Weissberg’s incredible instrument, the Clex. Heinz told me he liked my piece, but that I should bear in mind that “all the best music is quiet.”

CNZ gave such a wonderful performance of Gormod – a quintet for oboe, basset clarinet, euphonium, viola and cello. It was the first time the piece had been performed without a conductor, which is how I intended it, and no small feat given how difficult it is to stay together. They really brought the music to life.

A recording was made and will be available in due course. In the meantime, here are some photos from our trip. taken in Zürich, Switzerland by @morganwilliamsb

This post is dedicated to my wonderful partner, Tom, and to all the beautiful friends and loving family who came to Munich to support me.

There really are no words. You made me feel like a queen – queen of the giraffes! 🦒👑

Thank you for looking after me, cheering me on, calming me down, making me laugh, retying my kimono, and helping to make the day so full of love and joy. I will be forever grateful to each and every one of you.

Munich, you glorious city! ✨

We had the most incredible time at a certain prize-giving, and it was truly a day I will never forget. It is an enormous honour to receive an Ernst von Siemens Composer Prize, but what moved me most was being surrounded by people from so many different parts of my life.

One of my favourite moments was when my boarding school mum met Adam Gorb, who was Head of Composition at the RNCM when I was an undergraduate. She said, “So you had her after us!” – followed by much laughter about me being completely and utterly unmanageable. She was not wrong. It has gotten me into trouble many times, but I wouldn’t change it. Don’t be a sheep. Don’t hog the middle lane. Walk your own way.

A huge, heartfelt thank you to everyone at the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation, and to all the wonderful friends, colleagues, teachers, mentors and loved ones who came to support me. Seeing friendly faces from the UK, Germany, the Netherlands, school, college and beyond was completely overwhelming in the best possible way – and it was truly a blessing to meet Hovik and Kitty.

The whole day was surreal, joyful and exhausting: presenting ourselves to the board, aperitifs, lunch, hair and makeup in the hotel room, a very emotional Tom seeing me all dressed up, sparkly toes, a giraffe-print kimono, a boiling taxi ride, trying not to melt from nerves, beautiful acapella singing, photos, flowers, hugs, and finally the reception.

We were put up in the Bayerischer Hof, which was exquisite beyond words. Rooftop breakfast in the sunshine, gluten-free bread baked especially for Tom, and hotel staff somehow pressing the lift button before I even got there. Absolute magic.

For those of you coming to Munich, you may soon hear me confess that I didn’t always get on with Britten’s music…

So here’s a photo of me and Tom at Peter Grimes at Leeds Grand Theatre in February. Not quite definitive proof that Britten and I have made friends – you’ll just have to trust me that that’s why we were there.
