I've recently published the audiobook of the my first book, The Greatest Traitor, which appeared way back in 2003. Narrated by yours truly. ...And one of the most extraordinary things about Le Mans Cathedral in prticular is how it was built out over the town walls, over a slope, using multiple flying buttresses, and all this heavy-load engineering was accomplished by workmen who were mostly illiterate. And here it is, still standing after 800 years.

Z is for Zenith in my medieval A-Z. And what did I decide was the zenith of the Middle Ages? I went for the cathedrals. I was in Le Mans Cathedral one day, marvelling at it, when I began to grasp how much work and vision went into its building. It inspired the final part of my book 'Medieval Horizons' - in fact, I'll post some pics of the very spot.

Y is for Your Ancestors in my medieval A-Z. Because everyone of English ancestry is descended from almost evryone alive before 1300 who has descendants today. And we're all descended from Edward III and his nemesis, Roger Mortimer. You can read more about this in my biography of Edward III, 'The Perfect King', as well as in this book.

W is for Women in my medieval A-Z.
Re-reading what I wrote, I am reminded that what I wrote about sexism in the Middle Ages seemed terribly backward at the time of writing. Yet these things are still issues today; I just read about similar attitudes being advanced in today's newspaper. Our place in time is always precarious; our values always fragile.
