#OTD 16 October 1326. The mob violence that yesterday took the life of Walter Stapleton today takes the Tower of London. When the Tower falls, Hugh Despenser's wife, Eleanor, is taken into custody, and Edward and Isabella's young son, John of Eltham, left there in her care, is named Guardian of the City and placed instead in the care of the Bishop of London. Three of Roger Mortimer's sons, Edmund, Roger and John, who had been held prisoner by Edward since 1322 and throughout Roger's exile, are freed. The brothers were soon reunited with their father and knighted by young Edward III at his coronation four months later. Meanwhile, Roger and Isabella are still en route to Bristol, where all hell is about to break loose! Over the next four years, with a programme of events, publications, visits to key locations and talks by leading historians, the Mortimer History Society is marking the seven-hundred-year anniversaries associated with Roger Mortimer's days of power (1326 to 1330). #OTD 15 October 1326 Following Edward II's departure from the city, and encouraged by Queen Isabella's proclamation asking Londoners to support her against Despenser, London breaks out in violent riot. Walter Stapleton, Bishop of Exeter and Edward's controversial Treasurer, is among the victims. The mob catch up with him on the steps of St Paul's where, it's said, a baker severs his head with a breadknife. Meanwhile, Edward and Hugh Despenser have arrived in Chepstow, while Roger and Isabella are enroute to Bristol, where Hugh's father (Hugh Despenser the Elder) holds the castle. You can just feel a set-to coming on, can't you? Oh dear... #OTD 6 October 1326. Roger Mortimer and Queen Isabella join forces with Henry, Earl of Lancaster at Dunstable. His support, as England's premier noble is a major blow to his cousin Edward II and renders Roger's invasion unstoppable. Henry's brother Thomas of Lancaster - a long-time opponent of Edward II - had been executed by the king five years earlier. Whether Henry grieved for his brother is debatable, Thomas wasn't the easiest man to get along with, but he certainly resented that Edward had barred his inheritance to Thomas' five earldoms, which he saw as rightfully his. Roger and Isabella, he believed, would see his rights restored. I wonder if it'll be as simple as that... From Dunstable, Roger and Isabella, with Henry in their company, now turn west in pursuit of Edward and his much-hated favourite Hugh Despenser. Welcome to our Mortimer In Power programme. Over the next four years, with a programme of events, publications, visits to key locations and talks by leading historians, we’ll provide you with a window into the tangled history of the time when the Marcher lord Roger Mortimer brought down an English king. ENGLAND 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 Mortimer’s A to Zs of English History by Ian Mortimer #medieval #elizabethan #regency I do love a book that disseminates interesting snippets of information, guaranteed to make the reader reappraise their own history lessons, and highlights new and novel discoveries. Ian Mortimer takes his readers through the Medieval Period, through the Elizabethan and Restoration to Regency times, noting interesting and amusing amuse-bouches as he goes along I had never given much thought to the provenance and importance of the button but life without it is really quite difficult, unknown before about 1300. A simple tunic now has the wherewithal to take new shapes and no longer constrains people, who until then had to be sewn into their clothes. The simple button is liberating and facilitates much easier dressing. In the Elizabethan period he looks at the manner of killing people… 📚 Full review via 🔗 in bio 📚 #tripfiction #england #moritmersatozsofenglishhisotry #ianmortimer #readtheworld #triplit #literarytourism #literarywanderlust #literarytravel #books #destinationfiction #readtheworld #fiction #literature #booksbooksbooks #bookboundtravel

#OTD 20 September 1301, Roger Mortimer, 3rd Baron of Wigmore (later first Earl of March) married Joan de Genville at the Church of St Mary the Virgin in the manor of Pembridge, Herefordshire. It was a supremely beneficial marriage for Roger because Joan was one of the wealthiest and most eligible heiresses in the Welsh Marches. The estates she brought to him included the town and castle of Ludlow, the lordship of Ewyas Lacy, the manors of Wolferlow, Stanton Lacy, and Mansell Lacy in Shropshire and Herefordshire as well as a sizeable portion of County Meath in Ireland. You could say, in so many ways, marriage to Joan was the making of Roger Mortimer. Ludlow itself became the capital of the Mortimer estate. The marriage was a productive one and seems, in it early years at least, to have been close with Joan giving Roger a dozen children. However, when Roger rebelled against his former friend Edward II, Joan, along with her children, were imprisoned and, though she was freed in 1326 when Roger (with Queen Isabella) returned from France with an army and forced Edward's abdication, the couple seem never to have lived together again. Many historians assume this was because, by that time, Roger was Isabella's lover, though the evidence for that is slight. Perhaps it was simply that Joan preferred a quieter life managing the couple's vast landholdings in the Welsh March while Roger, inevitably, was consumed by the high-stakes politics of the court. Poor Joan was imprisoned again after Roger's execution by Edward III in 1330, though her freedom and landholdings were eventually returned to her in 1336. She is buried, alongside her husband, in Wigmore Abbey. #RogerMortimer #JoandeGenville #EdwardII #EdwardIII #MortimerHistory

The July edition of our quarterly newsletter, Mortimer Matters, is now available to read online! Our cover story picks up on one of the most exciting cultural events of the year – the Bayeux Tapestry’s return to England. From September it will be on display at the British Museum, and its arrival in the country earlier this month is already causing a commotion! We invited Dave Musgrove, author of The Story of the Bayeux Tapestry, to give us his thoughts on its origins, history and continuing significance. And, if you’re looking for a more local opportunity to go pick up on Bayeux-mania, don’t forget that our 10 October is dedicated to the tapestry. Dave himself will be just one of our outstanding speakers. Tickets are on sale now at www.mortimerhistorysociety.org.uk/events. Other great reads include Dr Kit Heyam on the sexuality of Edward II, and we're sure you'll love Ian Mortimer's A to Z of Mortimer history.
