Sudanese photographer and storyteller Ammar Abdallah, also known as Mory (@mory_002) moves between image and memory, weaving a visual language shaped by his life as a textile merchant and observer of the everyday. Through his work, he traces the intimate architecture of family, mapping complex emotional terrains shaped by dreams, inherited stories, and lived experience.

His practice is rooted in personal identity and environment, where memory functions as a shifting material that shapes how images are formed and read. He has exhibited with the East Africa Photography Award (Singles Category) and at UPPA, Uganda, and presented work in the group exhibition Fragments of Home at The People’s Forum, New York (2024). That same year, he joined mentorship programmes with Through the Lens Collective and Sudan Visuals.

ARTICLE | Tahreeb and the Endurance of Sudan’s Desert Merchants

From the souqs of Cairo to Wad Medani, Sudanese merchants like Mory continue to navigate conflict, restrictions, and arduous desert routes to sustain their livelihoods.

As the war in Sudan enters its third year, formal travel across the Egyptian border has become prohibitively expensive if not entirely restricted. Many merchants now rely on Al Tahreeb—clandestine journeys across the desert—risking everything to provide for their families and communities.

Curator Rahiem Shadad (@rahiem.shadad) & journalist Kang-Chun Cheng (@takeme.north) trace Mory’s journey (@mory_002), illustrating how he uses photography to process the war.

From the vibrancy of the evolving textile trade, the heaviness of the long tahreeb journey, to the intimacy of family memories, Mory’s photography sheds light on the many ways people cope with the unbearable costs of conflict.
