The Contrapuntal is delighted to invite you to the opening of our latest project, EverydayNile: Water, Energy, and Food Justice Along and Beyond the Nile River.

Funded through The Journalism Science Alliance, a joint partnership led by The European Journalism Centre and Universidade NOVA de Lisboa, and implemented with IHE Delft Institute for Water Education this project brings together photographers, researchers and project partners from across three Nile Basin countries – Ethiopia, Sudan and Egypt – to examine how environmental and social changes are experienced by communities living along the river.

The exhibition presents photographic stories in those countries developed by photographers working with communities and researchers on issues ranging from water access and environmental change to food systems, livelihoods and the everyday realities of people living with the Nile.

The evening will also feature a panel discussion between researchers, photographers and project partners, reflecting on the process of bringing scientific research and visual storytelling together.

The programme will conclude with a reception with drinks and snacks, offering an informal space for researchers, photographers, students, journalists and the wider public to meet, exchange ideas and continue the conversation.

Date: Thursday 10 Sep 2026, 18:00 - 21:00
Location: Atrium, International Institute of Social Studies, The Hague
Free entrance!

Sudanese photographer and storyteller Ammar Abdallah, also known as Mory (@mory_002) moves between image and memory, weaving a visual language shaped by his life as a textile merchant and observer of the everyday. Through his work, he traces the intimate architecture of family, mapping complex emotional terrains shaped by dreams, inherited stories, and lived experience.
.
His practice is rooted in personal identity and environment, where memory functions as a shifting material that shapes how images are formed and read. He has exhibited with the East Africa Photography Award (Singles Category) and at UPPA, Uganda, and presented work in the group exhibition Fragments of Home at The People’s Forum, New York (2024). That same year, he joined mentorship programmes with Through the Lens Collective and Sudan Visuals.

Earlier this month I wrapped up my time as Digital Editor at @icaruscomplexmagazine, a publication dedicated to articulating the systemic issues underpinning the climate crisis.

I celebrate the kind and inspiring team at the heart of the magazine as well as our brilliant community of writers, photographers, filmmakers, and organizers who brought us into the vibrant yet rapidly shifting worlds of their communities and neighbors.

These stories are available to view online. From Sudan to India, Palestine, Colombia, Ukraine, Kenya to Afghanistan, and Brazil, South Africa, and Iran – each story has opened my eyes to the invisible threads which make us responsible to one another as we adapt to a rumbling Earth. I hope reading and viewing incites reflection on how we might organize in line with our collective values, collectively.

Merciiiii 🤍🤍 @afsi14 @mads_baz @liindaforster @orkababa @christina.zampoulaki @virshah_ @melina__patricia @sophiahoag

"Temporary Homes," which secured 1st Place in the 2025 East African Photography Award (EAPA) Stories category, powerfully illustrates that while the conflict may appear to be between military powers, inwardly, it is a war against Sudanese citizens. This series reflects on the immense displacement and how families strive to create belonging in impermanent spaces.

The photographer behind this work is Ammar Abdallah, an award-winning Sudanese documentary and conceptual photographer, whose powerful work focuses on displacement, heritage, and identity.

Don't miss the chance to learn directly from the winner! Ammar will share the insights behind this powerful, award-winning work at the "Behind the EAPA Stories" panel on Tuesday, 11 November, at 4:00 PM (EAT). Sign up at the link in the bio.

Ammar Abdullah Osman, known as Mory ( @mory_002 ), is a self-taught Sudanese artist whose portraits turn fabric into language. Born in Wad Madani to a family of textile merchants, he transforms the visual codes of trade - pattern, texture, repetition into portraits of belonging. Each fold carries memory, movement, exile, and the everyday beauty of Sudanese life.

ARTICLE | Tahreeb and the Endurance of Sudan’s Desert Merchants

From the souqs of Cairo to Wad Medani, Sudanese merchants like Mory continue to navigate conflict, restrictions, and arduous desert routes to sustain their livelihoods.

As the war in Sudan enters its third year, formal travel across the Egyptian border has become prohibitively expensive if not entirely restricted. Many merchants now rely on Al Tahreeb—clandestine journeys across the desert—risking everything to provide for their families and communities.

Curator Rahiem Shadad (@rahiem.shadad) & journalist Kang-Chun Cheng (@takeme.north) trace Mory’s journey (@mory_002), illustrating how he uses photography to process the war.

From the vibrancy of the evolving textile trade, the heaviness of the long tahreeb journey, to the intimacy of family memories, Mory’s photography sheds light on the many ways people cope with the unbearable costs of conflict.
