Adam Lee, Ossuary, watercolour and ink on paper

In Ossuary, Adam Lee draws on themes of memory, history, and misinterpretation. Inspired by a passage from Paul Harding's Tinkers, which tells the story of a man gazing upon bent and broken forms of tree branches, imagining them to be "the fossil yard of an extinct species of fine-boned insectoid creatures". Layered forms emerge through a richly pigmented surface, suggesting extinct creatures, buried histories and the traces of languages now lost, reminding us that our understanding of the past is always incomplete.

Discover Ossuary and 73 other remarkable finalist works in the 2026 Mosman Art Prize.

Abby Chambers, Rivendell #3, synthetic polymer paint on board

Drawing on personal memories of Rivendell, the historic grounds of the former Concord Mental Hospital, Abby Chambers uses colour, light and simplified forms to evoke the atmosphere of a place that has stayed with her over time. Rather than focusing on exact detail, the painting explores the emotional resonance of the landscape and the memories it can hold.

“This painting is from a series of landscapes primarily focused on capturing the emotional nature of a place through colour, light and simplified shape.”

Ildiko Kovacs, Edging form, oil stick and oil on plywood

Celebrating 40 years of painting practice in 2026, Ildiko Kovacs continues her exploration of gesture, movement and the physical act of painting. In Edging form, sweeping lines and layered colour reveal a process of continual reworking, where traces of earlier decisions remain visible beneath the surface.

“I like my paintings to show the history of making, to become activated through the process of reworking.”

Alive with rhythm, energy and movement, Edging form reflects an artist still pushing the possibilities of paint after four decades of practice.

Lottie Consalvo, I heard you run into the darkness, synthetic polymer paint on linen

What if the darkness wasn't something to fear?

For Lottie Consalvo, the creatures that emerge at night are gentle companions rather than ominous presences. In I heard you run into the darkness, weeds, animals and devotional forms intertwine, dissolving the boundaries between the natural and spiritual worlds.

“For Consalvo, the creatures that live in the dark are not menacing. They are gentle, companionable, and guiding.” (@arielabard)

Dreamlike and deeply contemplative, the work invites us to see nature as a place of wonder, connection and quiet transformation.

Hayley Megan French, Patterns for a Home (Some Thoughts I Couldn't Put Down), synthetic polymer paint on canvas

Hear Hayley speak about her artistic process on Wednesday 7 October from 6pm as part of our second round of artist talks thanks to @colormaker_industries. Come and hear from this year's Allan Gamble Award winner.

What transforms a place into home?

For Hayley Megan French, inspiration came from an everyday sight: towels draped over a neighbour's balcony. Repeated, extended and reimagined through paint, these familiar domestic patterns become markers of belonging, memory and place.

"What repeats begins to matter. Through painting, an ordinary encounter becomes a way of locating myself in place."

George Goodnow, Buzz Cut, oil on canvas

Hear George speak about their artistic process on Wednesday 7 October from 6pm as part of our second round of artist talks thanks to @colormaker_industries.

In Buzz Cut, George Goodnow captures the quiet ritual of gender affirmation through a simple yet powerful scene: freshly shaven hair scattered across a bathroom floor beside a pair of clippers. The artist is absent from the image, yet their presence is felt in every detail.

"The work captures the aftermath of a buzz cut... These objects create a portrait, even though I am absent from the frame."

By focusing on the traces left behind, Goodnow transforms an everyday act into a reflection on identity, self-determination and becoming.

Robby Bennett, Dogma, Desire and Departure, oil and charcoal on clear primed cotton

Hear Robby speak about his artistic process on Wednesday 7 October from 6pm as part of our second round of artist talks thanks to @colormaker_industries

In Dogma, Desire and Departure, Robby Bennett brings together symbolic objects, fragments of history and expressive painterly marks to create a work that unfolds through association rather than narrative. Familiar references appear untethered from time and place, encouraging viewers to form their own connections.

“The painting presents an opportunity to navigate ideas surrounding the trivialisation of violence and the relationships between reality and imagination, presence and absence.”

Max Ballard, It's a shoes off house, oil paint on canvas

Do you recognise this room, even if you've never been there?

In It's a shoes off house, Max Ballard captures the feeling of a remembered home. The dimly lit living room, separated from the warmth beyond by a set of glass doors, evokes the kinds of spaces that linger in memory: a friend's share house, a grandparent's living room, or somewhere from childhood that is difficult to place but impossible to forget.

"The painting depicts the living room of a friend's share house in Adelaide, but it could be the house you grew up in, where your grandparents lived, or the distant memory of a childhood friend's home."

Mary Clifton, The Swimmer, oil paint on canvas

Have you ever wished you could stay suspended in a perfect moment?

Inspired by a frame from an old home movie, Mary Clifton's The Swimmer captures a figure drifting through water, surrounded by ripples of her own making. Bathed in afternoon light and rendered with loose, expressive brushwork, the painting embraces atmosphere over detail, allowing the scene to feel both specific and dreamlike.

"She is captured mid-swim, in a moment of equilibrium, surrounded by an eddy of her own making."

Balancing freedom with restraint, Clifton invites us to slow down and linger in a fleeting moment that feels timeless.

Come and discover The Swimmer alongside 73 other outstanding works in the 2026 Mosman Art Prize.
