I've been really enjoying my Honesuki lately and thought I should post it sometime. Then this morning, Neil over at @discommon did a story encouraging people to just make the thing, and if they had made a thing, to post it and tag them. So, here's my Honesuki, for my fourth crack at making knives, I'm really happy with it. The handle feels great. My first try at a compound grind works exactly as I hoped it would. And I just really like it.
So if you've always wanted to make something and you've got the chance, give it a try!

Two more in the books! For a fourth swing at making knives I'm really pleased with these, the weight and balance in-hand is just great. The Honesuki only weighs 90g! Comparing this Santoku to my first try at a kitchen knife... the differences are stark and I love seeing the progression. Working in batches sure is a great way to learn.
The steel is AEB-L at 61 HRC and the handles are spalted maple and ebony. The Santoku had a full-height flat grind on both sides. The Honesuki has a flat grind on one side and a compound grind on the the other — the hope is that aids in food release, we'll see if it works.

Finished my Honesuki's handle today. I did a traditional wa handle but added a taper to the sides for comfort while using a pinch grip. I'm really pleased with how it turned out. The wood is ebony and spalted maple, both stabilized.

Trying a C-grind Honesuki for my next build... 🤞🏼🤞🏼 it works out! The @nordic_edge grinding jig sure makes things easier. I'll get you freehand grinding, but when doing things for the first time, the jig helps with figuring out pressure needed, how different belts cut, and how each movement translates to the blade.
The Kant Twist clamp is a big upgrade when using this jig.
(I slipped at the tip, it will be an easy fix later on)

Well, they're done. Did they take way longer than I thought they would? Absolutely. Do they have issues? Many. Am content with how they turned out for my third attempt at making knives? I really am.
These are my interpretation of the classic Bob Loveless Chute knife. I wanted to keep Bob's style but make it more me. I'm calling them Kasa, it's Japanese for umbrella and what is an umbrella if not a tiny parachute — and these are smaller than the original Chute knives. They are CPM154CM at 61hrc, the guards are brass, the handles are epoxy soaked Ito over stingray skin. The sheaths are 8oz leather outers with dual 10oz welts, and they are lined with a high-pile fleece that holds the knife in quite well (only designed for carry with the tip down). I saddle stitched the sheaths with waxed braided thread and threw on an UltiClip. The Chicago screws that came with the UltiClips were not thick enough for the sheaths, so I got a few button-head Robertson screws from local fastener store — the Robertson is a little Canadian touch, and it's a superior screw to the Phillips.
I've got a lot of people to thank for tips and inspiration, but IG isn't letting me @ them, so I'll add a comment later.

Final shaping the sheaths today.
Leather work is humbling... it's so easy to mess up. The slim margin for error doesn't play well with my tendancy towards perfectionism. My sheath will be a little uglier than the other 2 but it's my first time trying what I did and I already have a plan to do it better.
I'd hoped to finish the sheaths today but after my mistake, I knew it was better to walk away for a bit. At least all my tools worked great.
Let's hope tomorrow is a better day.

Well, these are pretty cool 😁.
I'm getting so close to the finish line on my chute knives, they just need some minor clean up and sharpening. I picked up some harness needles and waxed thread today and I'll start on the sheaths soon — the front and back will be the dark brown with the welt the natural leather.

Okay, now that's a wrap! Evened out all the spacing, tightened things up, smoothed all edges, and brushed on the epoxy, now we wait. Next, I'll make sheaths, then sharpen them, and they're done! by @mossbladeworks

That's a wrap! Well, kinda... 2 was supposed to be green but the last of my lace was 1" too short... 🤬 — you can see what it should have looked like in the second picture. So, I had to pivot to black-on-black, which is kind of growing on me, though I really liked the green. The storm grey and maroon will darken up significantly with epoxy. Next I'll even out all the spacing and get these handles epoxied. I really like the stingray underlay.

Starting on handles this afternoon. I knew cutting stingray skin nicely was going to be a challenge but it's even tougher than I expected! I actually ended up using my guillotine style paper cutter, you know the one that every kid in the '90s had in their classroom and thought "this is dangerous... and kind of cool", to cut it cleanly. I'll get the tsukaito done this week.

Guards are done 😁.
It's pretty cool up turn a block of raw brass into something like this. Working with brass had been interesting, what cuts it well, what doesn't, how easily it scratches, and how heavy it is – I'm a bit worried about the balance point on my chute knives. But overall, a very cool process.

More guard progress today, they're so close to done 😁. I'm hoping I can move on to handles next weekend.
