For me, there’s not much more gratifying than putting up new routes, especially the ones that really challenge me. The whole process makes the eventual send that much more meaningful.

There’s always a little anticipation and anxiety before I pull on. Am I going to be present enough? Focused enough? Ready to truly give everything I have? That’s part of what makes it so rewarding. Trying hard sounds simple, but it takes commitment to fully lean into the effort. Add the hour hike in and you really want to give it your all when you’re up there.

This was one of those days where @tahoeboulderingguides and I both managed to redpoint our new route back-to-back, which made it even more special. Also, finding new potential at a wall as cool as Cascade is awesome.

We’re thinking it clocks in at 12b, and it turned out to be an absolutely stellar line. It’s had to tell in the video but the upper dihedral is steep!! It’s 12 bolts and 4 have fixed draws, so go get on it! We did a ton of cleaning but with all new routes, traffic will really help get this thing dialed in. taken in Lake Tahoe, California by @mosshalladay

Reflecting on the past two weeks and a fantastic trip to the Red. We were in full development mode and only spent one day climbing classics. For me, developing new routes gives me so much joy, diving into the unknown, with only a thought and a vision. It’s hard to explain but it gives me a deeper purpose to my climbing story than just going climbing. I can leave a little part of myself, personal expression on these lines. Hopefully giving others the opportunity for a great experience themselves. We spotted this line last fall, on our last day. As soon as we saw it, it started raining and we couldn’t do anything other than imagine what it would be like. I spent all winter thinking about this line, almost on a daily basis. Hoping, that when we returned in the spring it would still be un done. To my surprise it was still sitting waiting, so I dove in immediately! We’re calling this line Silent Burden 12b/c. It ended up climbing better than I could imagine, the movement is excellent and so is the rock. I hope others will enjoy this route as much as I have! Im grateful it was such an enjoyable and meaningful process for me. by @mosshalladay

I’m in my final days here in New Mexico, and the climbing in the Jemez has been incredible. I’m especially fired up that I was able to complete a project that @chossartisan and I established in the spring — a route we call Cthulhu.

We equipped it right before I left for Tahoe to work on the guidebook, and I came so close to redpointing it back then. But the guide needed to take precedence, so I walked away without the send. Once Jason redpointed it, we decided to open it up to everyone since it was too good of a route to keep closed. I’d rather people enjoy the climbing than have it waiting on me indefinitely.

It’s been extra cool getting messages from friends who’ve gone and climbed it — that always feels special. We think it’s around 12c, and it’s definitely one of the hardest routes I’ve redpointed. A cool and meaningful progression I am proud of.

Developing routes — especially ones that push my limits — always feels a little spiritual. There’s something powerful about having a vision for a line, putting in the work, and then seeing it through to the end. This one felt meaningful in all the right ways. I can’t thank Jason enough for the support on it and for doing routes with him! taken in Jemez Mountains by @mosshalladay

Echo Lakes season is finally approaching.

It was rad to revisit these routes @tahoeboulderingguides, Mike, and Squeezo and I established a few years ago on Flagpole peak. It had been a while since I had last climbed them.

Climbing them again, I was reminded just how much fun they are — honestly, even more fun than I remembered.

Dave and I were able to show @lost_goat_media and @john95724 around, and it made for a great day. The climbing is every bit as good as the photos look!

I hope some of you get the chance to make it out this fall. taken in Echo Lake, California by @mosshalladay

With these hot temps, it’s been nice to put some extra time in at Coldstream. A ton of new routes have been added over the past few years, which will be featured in the new Guidebook, as well as the upper tier—and there are some serious gems in there!

I decided it would be fun to put some time into Batwing 5.12c, and this thing is really cool. The movement is super fun, with a little bit of everything packed into the route. For anyone looking for a great 5.12, I’d definitely recommend it!! taken in Lake Tahoe, California by @mosshalladay

I’m really psyched on this one! Bronco, is by far one of the coolest routes I’ve ever done.

At the end of the day the biggest crux wasn’t the moves—it was getting out of my own head and committing to the top section, risking a big fall, and staying engaged.

The last moves intimidated me, despite being pretty easy overall. It feels airy up there. If you’ve been on the route before, I’m sure some of you might have felt the same way!

One of the things I love most about projecting is getting beat down but continuing to come back anyways and learning from the past tries so you can make progress going forward. Eventually it clicks if you stick with it.

Thank you everyone who came out to support me on it the last few months, it wouldn’t have happened without you and I really appreciate everyone! taken in Donner Summit by @mosshalladay

I think about this route often, Cthulhu was an incredible process and the culmination of being in New Mexico for a bit before I came back to Tahoe. I’m surprised it sat there for so long but was very excited to work on this with @chossartisan and contribute a line to the Monster Wall . We spent many days and nights climbing on this until we figured out the right beta. I really enjoy doing new routes that push my abilities , I think helps me get a better understanding of pushing my personal boundaries. It’s been cool to hear from people who have been getting on it and enjoy the climbing, a nice byproduct beyond the experience with Jason. I enjoy saving and watching these videos as time seems to creep faster and faster and these memories get me fired up for what’s next to come. taken in Jemez Mountains by @mosshalladay

A really fun one from the Spring that @tahoeboulderingguides, Squeezo, and I did at the Red. The intro crux is a bit of a doozy and we were having a challenging time figuring it out, awkward feet and a lengthy move to the good holds. It’s going to be way easier if you’re tall and harder if you’re shorter. Once your through it, you’re rewarded with easier but sustained climbing to the anchors on great rock. I think we were all pretty surprised I did the crux on this go, I had kinda written it off and somehow did it. We are calling it Silent Rage and it’s somewhere in the 12b/c range. by @mosshalladay

There’s something special about the routes that take time to come together.

In the fall of 2024, @chossartisan and I started working on a new route when I was in New Mexico with an idea that had spawned about 5 years before we started. Slowly our idea turned into a route we named Tilt Shift. Over the course of countless hikes, long days on the wall, cleaning loose rock, figuring out sequences, and a whole lot of problem solving, the line finally came to life.

The result is an incredible 4 pitch 5.12a that climbs straight up one of the coolest features we’ve worked on together. Looking back, it’s hard to believe it’s already been almost a year and a half since we first started the project. Jason and I have shared a lot of adventures developing new routes over the years, and this one sits pretty high on the list for me.

Recently, some friends went out and repeated it, which honestly felt just as rewarding as finishing the route itself. Seeing other people experience the climbing, the position, and the vision behind it reminded me why these projects are so meaningful in the first place.

I figured it was finally time to share a few photos from the many missions that brought Tilt Shift to life. by @mosshalladay

Metal Blade 5.12a is an old Dan Osman route that he put up in 1988. The crux moves are incredibly cool and feature a sweet Dyno. Dave and I rebolted it and it is good to go! Here are videos of both Dave and I doing the dyno. I hope this sees some traffic because it’s rad. by @mosshalladay

A fun techy sequence from Silent Burden, before you enter the crux and get into the steep crimps above. The overall movement and rock on the route is incredible. It’s somewhere in the 5.12b/c range. taken in Red River Gorge Kentucky by @mosshalladay

A few moves from a route @tahoeboulderingguides and I established up at the Red — the movement is absolutely incredible, somewhere in the 12a range.
