At many points in history, horses were prestige technology: expensive to maintain, train, and deploy at scale. In the late 6th century, Achaemenid Persia built one of the ancient world’s most impressive “information networks” by pairing infrastructure (the Royal Road) with a state-run relay courier system. Couriers would ride from station to station, swapping to fresh horses and handing off messages so communication could move at a near-continuous speed across huge distances. Ancient observers credited this system with an astonishing pace.

Our information technology systems have come a long way. We’re still a little obsessed with these beautiful, living predecessors.

Sometimes our best ideas come from daydreams (or actual dreams), but nevertheless, we have flourishing imaginations. AI is a tool—not a replacement for that one irreplaceable aspect of human nature: our ability to hold a higher vision. There are infinite universes, and in one of them, Beethoven’s ghost is running across the plains.

That’s the energy we’re after when we create: something that feels a little unreal, compelling, and alive.
