"Today I want to acknowledge what an incredibly inspiring and extraordinary woman my mom is. She was accepted to Carnegie Mellon's acting program at a (young) seventeen, and went on to be one of the few women in her class to have a successful acting career, one she has to this very day. She's had a life full of ups and downs, with bumps in the road, but has always managed to stay strong and postive. Whether she was thrown off a stage coach in "Little House on the Prairie" or rocking her doctor coat on "Alien Nation," she is also an amazing mom to me and my little sister. I'm so grateful to her for everything she's given me (including an all-white jumpsuit from the 1970s that she wore when headlining as a singer at the Blah Blah Club in Los Angeles). I'm so proud of you and your strength every day, Mom."—Megan, about her mother, M.E. by @mothersbefore

“My mother immigrated into the US from Mexico at three years old. She had to grow up at such a young age. At seventeen she met my birth father and later had me. She felt it necessary to stay in a relationship with my father because of me. She tried to make it work. But she didn’t want my sister and me to grow up seeing all of the hurt he caused. After eight years of tears she finally freed us from him. Ever since, she’s worked so hard on giving us everything she could. She’s given us stability, love and two little sisters to enjoy.” —Jasmine, about her mother, Yujana by @mothersbefore

“This picture was taken sometime back in the seventies when my mom was eighteen. She told me that she and her friends were like a real life version of “That ‘70's Show” and she was like a nicer & smart version of Jackie. I can definitely see it because she had a phenomenal sense of style as a teenager. —Amber, about her mother, Andre’a by @mothersbefore

“This is my mom on a New York rooftop, a decade before she became a mom. My dad took the photo; this was before they eloped. Looking at this brings me so much joy. She’s strong, calm, and just plain cool. She moved from the Midwest and made her own way, reading every mystery novel and drinking every Diet Coke as she went. I think she might be the smartest person in every room she enters. I don’t tell her enough how proud I am to be a little piece of her. “ -Gracie, about her mother, Annie by @mothersbefore

“This is my mom in Ecuador in 1997. My mom is my biggest inspiration. She came to the US chasing love and had me and later on my brother, all the while learning how to speak English, and advancing her career at the same company for almost 20 years. She’s taught me so much about perseverance. I’m lucky to be able to call her mine. Love you, mama.” —Chantal, about her mother, Rosanna by @mothersbefore

“This is my mom in the nineties before I was born. She lived on my grandfather’s walnut farm in a small town in North California and worked at a little burger shack called Sno White. She was the coolest and most beautiful girl ever--she still is. She is still close with all of her best friends from high school and I can’t wait until I’m her age to experience that kind of friendship. After high school she moved south and went to school at UCSD where she had me in ‘98...and still managed to graduate, get married, and put me through college of my own. I look up to her so much and she’s my biggest inspiration.” —Nessa, about her mother, Kelly by @mothersbefore

“Hello, Momma, I have thought about you 6,306,200 times since you crossed the bridge to forever sunshine, roses, coffee, cake, smiles, and laughter. You were so beautiful here, at fifteen. Before Dad, before kids. Hollywood would have loved you—you look more beautiful than any movie star, you would have sung the pants off anyone on any record label. Tell the gang hello, sing a song for us, enjoy the roses, lie in the sun, keep up that beautiful tan you always had, live your dreams. Until it’s my turn, save me a seat at the dinner table. Cheers and ciao, love and miss you always.” -Lisa Marie, about her mother, Camille by @mothersbefore

“This is a photo of my very beautiful and kind mom in 1949 at eighteen years old. She was born during the depression and was named Perma, (yes, Perma) after a neighbor lady that was kind to my grandmother (my mom’s mom). She married my dad three years after this photo was taken. She passed away eight days before their 65th wedding anniversary.” —Marcia, about her mother, Perma by @mothersbefore

“This is a picture of my beautiful mom (right) and her friend, right before she got pregnant with me. My mother has always been a force to be reckoned with. She hasn’t had an easy life, but she’s always been the one to protect her family and get stuff done. She has always been genuinely interested in people and helped anyone in any way she could. She is strong, powerful, and independent, the exact kind of person you’d want on your side when things got tough. She found out she was pregnant with me when she was a teenager and knew she’d have to raise me on her own, but she tackled everything head on and with such grace. She went from being my mother to being my best friend, and I’m so happy I get to share this life with her. “ —Gabby, about her mother, Angelica by @mothersbefore

“My mom is the one in the white collar, sitting with her wee Nanny Templeton and her sister Rachel. She was 14 years old. They were photographed in the front parlor of her home in Port Glasgow, Scotland. About two years after this photo was taken my mom was on a plane to New York to live with relatives she had never met. Bored and confined in her small town, she endeavored for bigger and better things. She was intrepid, willful, stylish, temperamental, beautiful and tall. She met my handsome dad, married him and had four children all before the age of 30. She was strict and critical but she was also loving, caring and very demanding of herself to be the best mother to all of us. She died of lung cancer having never smoked in 2014 just shy of her 70th birthday. Her whole life she remained fit and lovely, ageless and generous. She was my best and, dare I say only, friend and I miss her terribly.” —Heather, about her mother, Alice by @mothersbefore
