Antardhwani- The Echo Within An independent solo choreographic piece that derived from two proverbs that has kept every artist on their toes. Where putting all eggs in one basket is supposed to be regarded highly, whilst the artist stubbornly asks this question time and again, to themselves, to their spirits and in the mirror, if what they're choosing is valid. Once the adventure starts, they struggle, fail, worry, choose an uncomfortable passage, all in the name of doing the right thing. Well, the duality is so intense one forgets to enjoy the journey. My piece is meant to make people feel uncomfortable, that it shows on my face. I intend to make you restless for the dance part for you to realize not everything is about movement even in a choreographic piece such as this one. The moment you realize that listening intently has decayed throughout the years, is the moment you understand the gravity of what our gurus have taught and where we are headed in this fast world. Do those teachings apply in today's world still? We have to find out. Antardhwani is the inner monologue of every artist. Big, small, beginner, intermediates... Every artist. And afterall, every cloud has a silver lining. An artist can do it all or can they? "Antardhwani" in Pune was a small introductory piece to what it can actually become. Thanks to the very esteemed but critical panelists of Madam Menaka Choreography Movement, I've got an idea. A tour. A Grand India tour. Live musicians and everything. With a team. Sponsored events. "ता थेई तत् " — the heartbeat of my dance, the first words we hear when we start learning kathak. Maharaj ji’s words echo in me: ‘Ta’ is the taal, rhythm in wisdom, reaching the goal and journeying to the outcome... ‘Thei’ is a presence, patience (the thehraav) in the storm... ‘Tat’ is the tatva, the essence of a dancer, the personality on and beyond the screen, presence on the stage scaled in humility and perseverance... Somewhere along the way, these syllables became my greatest manifestations– my name, my being, my journey. We can spot the big ‘M’, that's how I’ve written it since childhood, my best friend will concur. ‘ता’ because, who hasn't started their journey with "ta-thei-thei-tat" as their first bols, but I was fortunate enough to be learning at 3.5 years with my first guru, Smt. Rumela Gupta ji. In ‘Ghosh,’ the flowing ‘g’ holds the unfinished threads of my father’s dreams — dreams I now carry forward with pride and in his memory. "G" and "h" together creates "क" of Kathak, which ultimately became the क, ख, ग of my life! ‘O’ rings like a ghungroo bell, my eternal companion... ‘S,’ adorned with tiny ghungroos, holds hope and the joys I pass on to my students. The red dot is my blessing from my mother who has supported and guided me through everything. The scattered motifs are a reminder that I've yet to achieve a lot in life and that I am a blessed child. And this logo, more than just my name, is my inheritance – my art, my identity, my journey as a kathak dancer, perhaps a story teller with a story of her own. Well, with it, I begin a new chapter – one rooted in memory, fuelled by riyaaz, and blessed by my gurus; My most prized relations– Maharaj ji, Saswati didi and Deepak bhaiya. Shout out to the logo designer, a like-minded strong woman, my dearest Simran (@that.desi.kalakaar ), her magical strokes and carefully curated ideas for this logo were brought to life as per my vision. You are one creative and magical young woman, thank you!!
