A wonderful opportunity to dance with live musicians and learn about sean-nós.

Sean-nós dance is ‘old style’ percussive dance from Ireland. It’s really fun, low to the ground, improvised and in the music. You are supposed to dance like yourself, responding to how the music moves you, a great way to express yourself and say 'I am here'.

Lead by our very own Maria Malone and Mikey Kenney.

For Movema’s artists, the Cultural Alliance has also been a space for growth, collaboration and learning.

Working as a team gave us the opportunity to learn from one another, share ideas, reflect on our sessions and develop our practice together. Every class called for flexibility, creativity and responsiveness, as no two sessions were ever the same.

The project continually challenged us to think creatively and adapt activities to meet individual needs, while maintaining high expectations for every student.

One moment that has stayed with us involved a pupil on crutches who couldn’t take part in the movement in the usual way. Rather than sitting out, they became the choreographer, directing their classmates as they adapted the dance around them.

It was a powerful reminder that inclusion isn’t about lowering expectations, but about creating meaningful opportunities for everyone to participate, contribute and shine. 💛

💚It’s tomorrow!💚

A wonderful opportunity to dance with live musicians and learn about sean-nós.
Sean-nós dance is ‘old style’ percussive dance from Ireland. It’s really fun, low to the ground, improvised and in the music. You are supposed to dance like yourself, responding to how the music moves you, a great way to express yourself and say ‘I am here’.
Learn some of the history and customs of this traditional art form, dance steps and improvisational techniques alongside some of the best Irish traditional musicians in Liverpool.
Suitable for all abilities and for adults and young people who can concentrate and follow a class structure. Musicians are also encouraged to attend to deepen their understanding of playing for dancers and the natural lift and dynamism in traditional Irish dance music.
Lead by Maria Malone from Movema dance charity and influential fiddle player Mikey Kenney.

We will have the amazing Penny from Movema leading a FREE World Fusion dance workshop at The Island open day. In this workshop, Penny will take participants on a joyful dance journey around the world, exploring different cultures, rhythms and movements along the way.

🌟 Everybody Dance Now is back! 🌟

Our family dance sessions return this Thursday and run through to February, thanks to funding from Bristol City Council and Quartet Foundation, with partnership support from Filwood Community Centre.

Local families are invited to join us for weekly dance, creative activities and crafts, as we work together towards a special performance for Lunar New Year. ✨

We particularly welcome new families from East and South East Asian communities who would like to get involved and help shape the project.

World Fusion had an amazing few weeks with Liza, learning the regional dance 'Shi Tac Tac' from the Peruvian Amazon and performing it at Tamboré's 'Who We Are, and Where We Come From' event at Bristol Beacon.

How about live music, a room full of dancing, a hearty bowl of vegan Irish stew… and the chance to support some pretty brilliant work happening right here in Liverpool?

On Saturday 17 October, we’re taking over St Bride’s Church with live band Saltcutters for a joyful, next-generation Céilí to celebrate Movema’s 17th birthday! 🎂

There’ll be dances and tunes travelling from Ireland, England, Scotland and beyond, plenty of chances to get up and join in, and absolutely no expectation that you already know what you’re doing.

No experience needed, no partner required. Come with friends or come on your own!

And because this is a fundraiser, all proceeds from the evening will help support Movema’s charitable work bringing dance to the communities that need it most, and supporting women, children and resettled communities across Liverpool. ❤️
