Thought it was about time I learned Charlie Lennon’s Liverpool Reels. This is the one that people call Liverpool Reel 1. This video was made as part of my practising: I like to record myself so that I can watch it back and think about how I might play with the tune some more. I’d spent the period running up to filming it trying to memorise the tune and repeatedly going into the b part of a different tune every time I came to it. Something other traditional music players will know all too well! When I came to the end here I realised that I had been concentrating so hard on not going into the wrong B part that I hadn’t considered how I might end it… hence the clumpity clump of an ending. Ah well, the tunes in my head now at least! This week I’m playing out in Liverpool twice - as part of the @livirishfest Thurs 15th Oct (tomorrow) - accompanying for Sean Nós dance workshop with @mariamiamalone at @liverpoolirishcentre - 4.30-6.pm Booking essential. Good morning me dearies! This coming week I’ll be getting stuck into this year’s brilliant @livirishfest programme and collaborating with @movemadance on two different dance events. No dancing to recorded music for you this week; it’s all live, live, live!! First up is a Sean Nós dance workshop (Irish old style step dancing) with @mariamiamalone at the @liverpoolirishcentre on Thursday 15th. Tickets are £15 - advance booking required. Then on Saturday 17th I’ll be taking our céilí band @saltcutters down to the beautiful @liveatstbrides to play for Movema Dance’s 17th birthday Céilí from 7pm onwards. Tickets are £20 and include an Irish stew (vegan & gluten free options available). This céilí is also serving as a fundraiser for Movema Dance - the indispensable Dance foundation that have served our community with invaluable and inclusive access to dance & music for the past 17 years. With times being so treacherous for the arts they need our support right now. Please don’t pass this by - it’s win-win for everybody; a great night of dance, music, food and drink in a beautiful venue and for a worthy cause. 🎃 SAMHAIN FAMILY FUN DAY – SATURDAY 31ST OCTOBER 👻 Join us at Liverpool Irish Centre for a full day of Halloween fun, Irish traditions, storytelling, games, crafts, music and plenty of spooky goings-on! The main event is Penny for the Puca with The Saltcutters, bringing songs, ghost stories, sean nós dancing and a Samhain céilí from 7.30pm. There’s plenty for the kids throughout the day, including Halloween crafts, a Samhain quiz, pumpkin displays, Irish storytelling and a kids’ disco. JOIN US 14th November in Liverpool for a unity march against the far right! 👆💚 The voices of division in our country are growing louder. Those who preach division are becoming more confident. For the first time the far right are driving politics at a national level, and far right protests on our streets are mobilising the biggest numbers they ever have. Their false promises seize on the very real economic problems people face, in order to scapegoat migrants, Muslims, and refugees. But we can change things together. The voices of unity can grow stronger. We can show that strength lies in solidarity. That the change we need comes from us working together for hope not despair, for unity not racism. • Together we can reject narratives of division and racism. • Together we can build solidarity across communities. • Together we can unite against the far right. On the 28 March 2026 500,000 people marched in London against the far right. It was the biggest demonstration of its kind in British history. Liverpool City Region Together are mobilising and organising across the Liverpool City Region for a march in Liverpool on Saturday 14 November 2026. A march that brings a message of hope over fear, love over hate and unity over division. We hope you can join us on Saturday 14 November and help build an alliance for hope and unity.

Sean-nós dance is ‘old style’ percussive dance from Ireland. It’s really fun, low to the ground, improvised and in the music. You are supposed to dance like yourself, responding to how the music moves you, a great way to express yourself and say ‘I am here’. Learn some of the history and customs of this traditional art form, dance steps and improvisational techniques alongside some of the best Irish traditional musicians in Liverpool. Suitable for all abilities and for adults and young people who can concentrate and follow a class structure. Musicians are also encouraged to attend to deepen their understanding of playing for dancers and the natural lift and dynamism in traditional Irish dance music. 🚼 At The Library presents It Takes A Village: a new three-day festival in Crosby Library Thursday 22 - Saturday 24 October Becoming a parent is a huge change in life- when exhaustion and joy meet in equal parts. This October we’re celebrating the network of people who care for, support and raise the smallest members of our communities. It's a joyful mini takeover of the library with creative and wellbeing activities for babies, toddlers and their mothers and carers and the wider community of helpers. Whether you're a mother, a grandparent, a cool auntie, chosen family, queer parents, new or old, or you've never been a parent yourself but part of a network of care, everybody is welcome. Expect baby-friendly film screenings, aromatherapy, sewing, zine-making, story telling, and a new take on a 'mother's meeting' with an edge. Find out more and book your place via our Linktree!
