How did I go from selling surgical implants to teaching Pilates?

It makes more sense than it sounds..

I grew up as a competitive athlete - ice hockey, then track and field. At McGill, I studied cognitive science - I learned about human psychology and neuroscience. It’s also where I started to develop a love for exercise and fitness - I remember spending too many hours running up Mount Royal and at the McGill gym.

After I graduated in 2018, I was back home in Vancouver, figuring out how I could combine my interest in human psychology with my passion for health and fitness. I had an opportunity to train as a cycling instructor, and I quickly fell in love with teaching. Then I met @geoffbagshaw at Equinox, and everything started coming together. During the quiet early days of COVID, he spent countless hours mentoring me - passing on years’ worth of knowledge, teaching me not only technique, but how to build confidence and carry myself as an instructor. He was and continues to be a big part of my journey.

Around the same time, I started practicing Pilates. It immediately became my favourite form of exercise. After years of HIIT, cycling, strength training, and running, it felt different. Slower. Calmer. More introspective. I felt more connected to my body.

Then I pulled back from teaching and moved into sales - first at Equinox, then into orthopaedic surgical sales. What initially felt like a detour actually deepened everything. I was immersed in the clinical side of movement - seeing sports injuries, understanding functional limitations, and learning anatomy from a completely different lens (inside the operating room).

Now I’m finally pursuing the training I always knew I’d come back to. My practice has become more intentional - shaped by anatomy, mentorship, and several years of paying attention to how bodies actually move. Like I said, it makes more sense than it sounds. It just took a while to get here..

I’m nearing the end of my certification, but Pilates isn’t something you finish - there’s always more to learn, more skills to refine. That’s what I love about it, and what I’m most excited for in this next chapter! taken in Vancouver, British Columbia by @movewithmk

Roll Up

Progressing into full spinal articulation. With your legs outstretched, pressed together and down, you reach your arms forward while maintaining a lift through your spine and pulling your waist back to stretch the entire back side.

This is a challenging mat exercise, and I’m still working on a few things, specifically individual articulation of each spinal vertebra and keeping my shoulders pulled down and connected to my back.

Come to my next mat class to experience it yourself! by @movewithmk

The half roll back.

A beginner system mat exercise. Introduces spinal articulation that will prepare you for the roll up. It strengthens all layers of your abdominals while stretching the back side of your body.

This one can be tricky to feel at first, but I like to think about digging your heels into the mat and pulling your waist back as you articulate the spine. Enjoy xx by @movewithmk

The Pull Up.

1. Strengthens the abdominals and shoulder girdle
2. Teaches to lift from the core, otherwise referred to as The Powerhouse
3. Trains the common fear of inversion

This is one of my favourite exercises on the wunda chair as it allows me to deeply connect to my core and helps strengthen and stabilize my shoulders. by @movewithmk

Earlier this month, I taught a class in the Quebec countryside, on the morning of one of my best friends’ weddings, with some of my favourite people in the world on the mats.

Fitness has always been a part of who I am - the people closest to me have always known that. Teaching these girls, in Quebec, where some of us went to university together, felt like a full circle moment.

This is me starting to share my journey as a fitness and Pilates instructor. 🫶🏻
