The Hill of Slane has always been a place where fires of renewal are lit. Last night, artivist @ciarandunlevy continued the tradition of our pre-Christian ancestors, St. Patrick in 433 & @brigidswaycelticpilgrimage in 2013, by reigniting Ireland’s flame in a new way.

Projected in rose & violet light onto the ruins of the old church, images of @catherine.connollytd & President Michael D. Higgins appeared side by side, surrounded by words such as Fierce Love, Grá, Misneach, Courage, Cumhacht, Power.

As Ciarán illuminated these words, two shooting stars appeared. The first travelled from north to south & the other one from south to north.

Nature herself was collaborating with us, sending a celestial sign of aontas, unity.

Inspiration for Ciarán’s projection work began months ago, when he invoked guidance to support Palestine.

He woke up the next morning to the cries of a baby golden eagle, who landed on a tree near his house, and then flew from the river to the sea.

Soon after, he began projecting images of Gaza onto Irish buildings using art to bear witness & call for justice.

“That eagle felt like a summons,” Ciarán said. “My belief in Catherine Connolly, her integrity, and vision was my next call. Wild horses couldn’t stop me projecting her light, in darkened places.”

When Ciarán told me he was driving through Slane last night, I guided him towards the fire of renewal on our ancient hill, sent him some words, poems, & a beautiful portrait of Catherine by @kiki_na_art to illuminate, with a beautiful photo of Michael D. Higgins and Catherine Connolly by Joe Shaughnessy.

Ciarán let the Imbas Draíocht flow through him. And this installation was birthed.

It is called “A Renewal of the Irish Flame”.

It is for Catherine Connolly and all she inspires.

In Heaney’s illuminated words…

“The further shore is reachable from here.”
