CUT PIECE, 2026 (July 19th)
74min

“There is not one score for CUT PIECE. This piece has existed in several scores and together they create these parameters. The performance should be set up theatrically, not as a gallery installation, and people must come up one at a time and make a cut of the performer’s clothing. The performer should remain motionless, and wear their best dress. Pieces of these instructions are announced before the piece, and the performance ends when the performer is naked.

Tonight’s best dress is by Aliona Kononova.
The underwear is mine.”

———
Yoko Ono last performed CUT PIECE in 2003 in Paris and addressed the audience before in a statement in which she said:

Cut Piece is my hope for World Peace.

When I first performed this work, in 1964, I did it with some anger and turbulence in my heart. This time I do it with love for you, for me, and for the world.

Her full statement is in slide 3. I read this statement before doing CUT PIECE on July 18th and 19th, along with my own remarks.

CUT PIECE, 2026
Los Angeles, CA
July 18th & 19th

I went into this piece with the intention to honor Yoko Ono and to make relevant a preeminent performance artwork. In the process I questioned what an act like this means in the world at this moment, and how the historical impact of this artwork would land with a socially mediatized audience. The outcome was that at its core, CUT PIECE is a social experiment. It quickly becomes less about the person holding the pose as the focus it presents to y o u : the audience viewing and participating. Do I cut? How do I cut? How are they cutting? What is this?

The piece does not need to entertain.
CUT PIECE watches people.

It exists in a tense “is”.

I left this experience feeling naked, cleansed, and with the embodied reminder: PEACE IS/A CUTTING PROCESS.

keep cutting 4 peace
resistance to the anti-life forces is alive
although much less televised

always ♾️,
MPA

CUT PIECE, 2026 (July 18th)
61min

The more I kept still, the more the audience had to consider. Saturday night’s audience was c u t.

——-

Yoko Ono performed Cut Piece 6 times, first in 1964 in Tokyo. At the end of her performance in London in 1966, she held up a sign that read:

My body is the scar of my mind

There is something poor about this art, the cardboard sign of it all, not in terms of accomplishment. Performance art in general often has this stripping down side… to some personal part of the performer’s human parts. An emotion or statement on bodily display.

I cringe at documentation of live art. because at its best, what’s a live is forged by energetic exchanges intersecting in the opposite efforts of capture and representation.

At the end of both nights, I flipped the sign with Yoko’s statement on it and offered the audience a personal statement of my own. I can’t offer you a photograph of me with it here without a feeling of betrayal…to how it lived in the moment, and not in the post. performance. I appreciate @jorifinkel account. Please read for a picture I can’t offer in whole.

I love this piece for its bareness, including bare narratives created by the audience. Everyone cut in a different way even when it was similar- micro cut narratives with their own beginning, middle, and end. Many of you said kind things or vulnerable things to me, some of you bowed or cut off a piece of your own clothing. Later, I heard there was gossip, memorable players that made more “dramatic” cuts or return cuts and even a confrontation in the lobby one night. I felt neutral to judgement, each of you felt like energy balls coming and going, a stream of continuous beginnings- which is presence. I heard it was riveting for you too. That there were climaxes and suspense, live in the making. A type of society, in the making. A type of human criticality and human love, in the making.

Thank you audience. Yoko set the score, I held the pose, but we made this peace together.
