Yoko Ono’s (@yokoono) landmark performance works from the 1960s sold out when they were staged in LA this summer, and now you finally get to watch both in full on YouTube. In Sky Piece to Jesus Christ (1965), six Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra (@lachamberorchestra) musicians play as they’re slowly wrapped in gauze until they can no longer perform. In Cut Piece (1964), artist MPA (@mpa_ma_mpa) sits silently onstage while audience members cut away pieces of her clothing, holding her stillness through every cut. These performances took place at REDCAT (@calartsredcat) and were presented by The Broad (@thebroadmuseum) in conjunction with Yoko Ono: Music of the Mind, closing soon on October 11. Watch the full performances at the link in bio.

Performance artist MPA @mpa_mpa_mpa restaged “Cut Piece” at REDCAT @calartsredcat, Los Angeles The piece began backstage with twenty minutes of silent eye contact between MPA and Logan Wolfe @l.gan. Following Ono’s instruction to wear one’s “best dress,” MPA changed into Victor Barragán’s @barragan fluorescent chartreuse design. As she sat perfectly still for an hour, the audience, too, became part of the performance, stepping onto the stage to cut away pieces of Barragán’s dress. Some cut tentatively, others with surgical precision, each slice revealing something of the participant’s own hesitation, uncertainty, curiosity, or desire for control. What an absolute honor to have my dress become part of Yoko Ono’s Cut Piece @yokoono performed by the extraordinary MPA @mpa_mpa_mpa at The Broad Museum. Seeing the dress transformed through a performance that invited reflection on peace, trust, vulnerability, and our responsibility toward one another was an unforgettable experience. Deeply grateful to everyone who made it possible. Sharing The Broad’s reflection on this unforgettable weekend @thebroadmuseum “Over the weekend at REDCAT (@calartsredcat), we honored the lasting power of Yoko Ono’s performance art with live stagings of Sky Piece to Jesus Christ (1965) and Cut Piece (1964), presented in conjunction with The Broad’s special exhibition, Yoko Ono: Music of the Mind. MPA (@mpa_mpa_mpa) took the stage for Cut Piece, sitting in total stillness while audience members came up one by one to cut a square from custom garments designed for the two performances by Victor Barragán (@v.arragan_) and Aliona Kononova (@alionakononova).” Credits: Photos 1, 6, 8–9: Courtesy of The Broad, photos by @salvador_ceja_garcia Photos 2–3: The Art Newspaper @theartnewspaper.official Video 5: @s_h_u_r thank you for capturing this under pressure Backstage photos & video: @l.gan , @k_ma_ckay Special thanks to @unitednude for the shoes that completed the look.

The latest version of Yoko Ono’s Cut Piece (1986), performed by the artist MPA in downtown Los Angeles on Sunday (19 July), turned out to be an example of mutual aid in the form of a trust fall disguised as a striptease. Like the original performance, a cornerstone of feminist art, it began with the artist sitting down quietly and silently on stage fully clothed, with a pair of scissors nearby. It ended when an audience member—one in a long line of spectators-turned-participants—snipped off the last shred of her clothes. Tap the link in our bio to read more.

LA- Love Always Thanks LA for holding and hosting me. From rinse and repeat art shows to the GREAT ones. Gifted books from friends whose work I deeply admire, being uplifted by the love letter sister dreamer by Lauren Halsey, holding center court at LA Sparks game, seeing friends happy, receiving warranted career promotions and expanding their families, gatherings at homes filled with love of friends I've know 15+ years, Ohhhh & peak level snacks, beautiful jazz collections, restorative time breaking bread with cherished mentors, a sweet reunion with my Calarts cohort. I look forward to this evolving courtship with this city and the people who make it feel like home🫂
