Vale to Australian recording legend Bill Armstrong.
@australianmusician had this to say about the great man…Bill Armstrong, the pioneering Melbourne recording engineer, studio owner, record label operator and radio entrepreneur widely regarded as one of the fathers of the Australian recording industry, has died.

Armstrong’s career spanned more than seven decades and encompassed virtually every aspect of Australia’s developing music and broadcasting industries. From the earliest days of home recording and jazz 78s through to the golden era of Armstrong Studios and the birth of commercial FM radio, he was repeatedly at the centre of technological and cultural change.

When Australian Musician spoke to Armstrong in 2024, at the age of 95, he remained remarkably engaged with the music that had shaped his life. The occasion was a discussion about his decision to donate recordings from his Bilarm Music and Swaggie Records catalogues to the Australian Road Crew Association, allowing the historic material to be reissued to raise funds for roadies and crew members in crisis.

For Armstrong, the donation represented a natural continuation of a lifetime spent preserving Australian music.
“It’s been all my life,” he told Australian Musician. “Giving something back into it is pretty good.”

RIP to Bill Armstrong from the MPEG Family 🖤 by @mpeguild
