Four countries, one band. 🇨🇳🇺🇸🇮🇹

EDWARD: SHANGHAI TO TORINO

Rock’s least likely hero. Conservatory-trained Shakespearean actor turned rock singer.

 • Born State-side, living in Shanghai's leafy French Concession — where grumpy阿姨s water plants over cobblestone sidewalks; and the best espresso in China hides behind a bike repair shop in Xuhui.

 • Recruited for SAGE during a Torino garage lockdown (2022) by Bart, “the evil genius” who’s 40% chaos, 60% genius, 0% remorse.

Cue existential crisis: Who should we interview next? 🧵💬

Feels like there’s something cathartic about giving shape to the shadows. 🌑 The development of this new dark rock track has been a journey through distorted sounds and lyrics born in the middle of the process itself. It’s not just music; it’s a reflection of everything we leave unsaid. Coming soon. #rock #newmusic #band #voice #guitar taken in 上海 by @mr.edwu

CHINAMAXX: A Story of Dialogue

Directed by Temitayo Ayodeji Taj
Written by Edward Wu

For the past 8 years, I've split my time between China and the West — working in London and New York, but living my life in Shanghai.

That divide is more than geographic. Living between two worlds has forced a reckoning with my own identity: where I belong, how I'm perceived, and how much of myself I've spent contorting to fit in. At some point, I stopped trying to force myself into America like an ill-fitting puzzle piece and turned, deliberately, toward my Chinese heritage.

So when I watch a wave of young Americans — disillusioned with the US — seeking something different through ChinaMaxxing, it stirs something complicated in me: recognition, hope, skepticism, and unease all at once.

CHINAMAXX was written out of that complexity. It's neither a clean celebration nor a dire warning — it's an honest attempt to confront my own identity in an ever-more fractured world. My hope is that it bridges our two cultures in a way that acknowledges the prejudices on both sides, while imagining a future where you don't have to choose which half of yourself to leave behind.

Directors Note: Early Chinese Americans (19th-early 20th century) and their connection to American roots music grew through shared labor spaces, such as the Mississippi Delta, where they coexisted with Black sharecroppers and blues culture, bridging cultures through shared musical scales

In the early 20th century, Chinese immigrants operated small grocery stores in the Delta, placing them squarely within the birthplace of Delta Blues. Early Chinese migrants worked on railroads and in mines alongside other marginalized groups, sharing the same harsh environments and similar, often overlooked, working-class folksongs. While maintaining traditional music, early Chinese Americans were exposed to early jazz, ragtime, and blues through traveling troupes and local interactions.

Similar to the storytelling nature of the blues, Chinese immigrants sang muyu (wooden fish) narratives to describe the struggles of immigration and daily life. Further exploration of this cross-cultural history can be found in discussions of the "Delta Chinese" and the evolution of American roots music.

In this film, I wanted to utilize the "Delta Blues" as a juxtaposition to the very message it tells, the blues belong just as well within "some" context of chinese culture because African Americans gave it to them fairly as a means of shared struggle.

My objective is to help us see the similarities between African and Asian (Chinese culture specifically), this is one of the reasons why I as a Black director can relate to "ChinaMaxxing" becuase it is a shared struggle.
