Here we are on the second show for Bude Jazz Festival 2026 with the chaps in The Carriers Inn We were in our usual afternoon outfit with striped blazers and boaters! With Andy Henderson, Phil Shotton, Anthony Mason and Richard Slater of Cafe Society Jazz Band Here we unleashed Andy Henderson on tootaphone and vocals with a stirring rendition of The Shiek of Araby! An amazing time was had at this year’s Bude Jazz Festival 2026 with the gentlemen of Cafe Society Jazz Band. On duty for our first ever visit was Phil Shotton, Andy Henderson Anthony Mason and Richard Slater. I arrived early on Tuesday morning after a fiendish drive from the North and was unexpectedly rewarded with a parking spot just outside the Falcon Hotel. I immediately alighted to urgently test how the Cornwall facilities compared to the more familiar northern ones. I’m delighted to say a favourable comparison occurred! After an essential coffee I sat outside and observed the beginnings of a Jazz performance! This casual assembly seemed to lack a banjo so I volunteered my services and within 20 minutes of arriving I was deep in rhythmic harmony with the assembled musicians! Phil Shotton soon arrived and after another coffee I followed him over to the Carriers Inn where he was performing with The Lonesome Travellers. Here I met Warren James for the first time and I must say was bowled over by the slick performance! I was interested to see this venue as we would be performing there on Friday morning. The next few days were filled with great performances by many amazing bands and I hoped we could hold our own in such illustrious company! Our first concert was at the Bude Golf Club and it was a wonderful if dramatic experience! We set up early and attempted to have a run through as Richard Slater had only just seen the arrangements, thankfully he was fine with the crazy music we presented him! We began and all was going well till the banjo string went bang!! I immediately grabbed the guitar but was instantly plunged into despair as another string failed!! I was forced to play percussion on the banjo till the interval!! After a frantic string change the second half went smoothly and the audience reaction was very positive! Shine! Second gig of the day and we are back at our regular haunt The Engine Room for a special evening extravaganza! During The Open Golf Tournament Eric R Lybeck our host contemplated an opportunity to get new friends into our Jazz Club environment and it’s fair to say he was spot on! On jazz golf duty was Phil Shotton on driving up the fairway clarinet! Phil Lucas on hole in one trumpet, Ken Marley on Mashie-Niblick double bass and me Anthony Mason on 12 iron banjo! Much mirth and slightly raucous banter pervaded the proceedings and the audience lapped it up! Some young coves said they’d never seen anything like us and we took that to be a compliment!! We were delighted to inform them that this was our regular venue and informed them of our future dates! 30 July 13 August 27 August 10 September 24 September 8 October 22 October 5 November 19 November The timings are 1.30pm -3.30pm and I hope you can join us for an afternoon of jolly jazz. £10 per person on the door and a splendidly stocked bar awaits you ! Second job of the day was in a delightfully cool venue in the Marquee at Mawdsley Cricket Club. This auspicious occasion celebrated 20 years of the University of the third age or U3A! The generosity of our hosts can’t be overstated and as we arrived slightly frazzled from the scorching heat of the Ormskirk Gingerbread Festival a serene atmosphere awaited our slightly sweaty ensemble! After some much needed liquid fortification we launched into our first of three jazzy sets! What an audience! To say they were receptive is a positive understatement! From the get go they hung on our every song and even delighted at the Fats Waller joke… that never gets a laugh!! We were then treated to afternoon tea and I must say the repast was delicious! After such a reception and hospitality the day couldn’t have been better and all the chaps unanimously agreed that a better day was hard to remember! Our annual appearance at the Ormskirk Gingerbread Festival was as always a great pleasure and most gratifying to see its attendance swell each year! On gingerbread duty was Phil Shotton on Gingerbread metal Clarinet, Phil Lucas on Gingerly played trumpet, Colin Turner on large scale ginger saxophone and my self Anthony Mason on gingivitis banjo! The glorious weather enhanced the overall experience and as always we are grateful to be a part of this wonderful community tradition.
