Nobody is keeping score.

Mind Cake thought … One day, even the people who changed history will be forgotten.

The Earth will disappear. The Sun will die. Given enough time, Shakespeare, Michelangelo, the Beatles, you, me and the bloke who had a perfectly pleasant Tuesday all arrive at the same place: obscurity.

And that can be strangely liberating.

You don’t have to become extraordinary.
You don’t need to leave a legacy.
You don’t have to turn every interest into an achievement, every hobby into income, or every hour into something productive.

Make something because you enjoy making it.

Learn something you’ll never monetise.

Help someone without changing the world.

Waste an afternoon doing something that makes you happy.

Nobody is keeping the cosmic leaderboard.

You don’t have to maximise the output of your tiny piece of the universe.

You get to experience being it. ✨

He did a handbrake turn to impress a girl. Then he hid in a hedge from the police. 😂

That's Jon Hannan, who in his own words says "the situation was ridiculous". A 1.1 litre engine, a police chase, airbags, a sprint through a hospital car park and a hedge with his name on it.

He's also the first to say it wasn't funny at the time. It was a symptom of a drink problem, and what happened next is the real story: therapy, grief, ayahuasca, a shaman in South Africa and a very different life.

He was 13. He knocked his two front teeth out, needed his stomach pumped and still told the doctor he'd only had "a little stubby of Heineken." 🍺

That's Jon Hannan. We trained together in the 90s, and he once chained me to a chair. Now he works with a shaman in South Africa and trains as a spiritual mentor. How he got from one to the other is the new Mind Cake, out tomorrow.

Not self-help. Just slightly more helpful than doing nothing.

Some conversations can’t be put off forever.

And apparently some things you write eventually have to be performed by actual people. In front of you. 😬

Gemma & Anne joined me for a special Mind Bite ahead of performing Inevitable at @ScriptsTheThing at @DorchesterArts on Saturday 10th October.

They performed 90 seconds of the play.

I discovered I am VERY uncomfortable listening to actors say words I’ve written while sitting approximately three feet away from me.

So I dealt with it professionally.

I doodled. ✏️

A lot.

Then we talked about Brian, Tom, dark comedy, what’s really going on underneath the play, and what happens when something you’ve written stops belonging entirely to you and starts becoming a performance.
