Reflexology. Woo or true?

We’ve pulled off our socks, wiggled our toes and road tested it for you to discover, does reflexology really work? 🤔

Listen to Mind Cake wherever you get your podcasts. Link will be in the comments.

We stole the spinner from my daughters’ Game of Life.

We put wellbeing treatments on it.

Then we made the mistake of agreeing to actually do whatever it landed on.

🎡 First up: REFLEXOLOGY.

Paul went in hoping someone might find his dodgy back and elbow through his feet.

I went in expecting a glorified, expensive foot rub.

So we took our socks off, got prodded, pressed and rubbed, recorded our immediate reactions afterwards… and then looked at what the science actually says.

And this is where it gets interesting.

The idea that different bits of your feet are connected to specific organs? 👀

But whether reflexology can actually make you feel better?

Well…

🎧 Does Reflexology Actually Work? | Wheel of Well-Being is out now.

👇 Listen via the link in the comments.

And tell us what should go on the wheel next. The more ridiculous the suggestion, the more nervous Paul and I become

Ross just heard the first spin of the wheel of well-being is coming on Tuesday.

Ooh you lucky cakers. You’re in for a treat. I wonder what it could be 🤔

He did a handbrake turn to impress a girl. Then he hid in a hedge from the police. 😂

That's Jon Hannan, who in his own words says "the situation was ridiculous". A 1.1 litre engine, a police chase, airbags, a sprint through a hospital car park and a hedge with his name on it.

He's also the first to say it wasn't funny at the time. It was a symptom of a drink problem, and what happened next is the real story: therapy, grief, ayahuasca, a shaman in South Africa and a very different life.

It's all in the new Mind Cake episode. Link in the comments.

Content note: the full episode covers addiction, self-harm and suicide.

Nice surprise this week: Mind Cake has been featured in the first @savills wellbeing newsletter.

Thanks to Dawn and the Savills team for the mention. It means a lot when a workplace wellbeing team picks up something that isn't self-help, just slightly more helpful than doing nothing.

If your team's wellbeing newsletter needs something a bit different, you know where we are. Link in the comments.

Whoops! Who knew 🤷🏼

Should I stick him down as a “maybe”?

Some conversations can’t be put off forever.

And apparently some things you write eventually have to be performed by actual people. In front of you. 😬

Gemma & Anne joined me for a special Mind Bite ahead of performing Inevitable at @ScriptsTheThing at @DorchesterArts on Saturday 10th October.

They performed 90 seconds of the play.

I discovered I am VERY uncomfortable listening to actors say words I’ve written while sitting approximately three feet away from me.

So I dealt with it professionally.

I doodled. ✏️

A lot.

Then we talked about Brian, Tom, dark comedy, what’s really going on underneath the play, and what happens when something you’ve written stops belonging entirely to you and starts becoming a performance.

Out now on Mind Cake.

And if you’re near Dorchester, you can see the 15-minute version live on Saturday 10th October at the Corn Exchange.

Scientific research in from Dorset:

There’s a lot to be said for a bit of sun, sand between the toes, salt on the face snd the sound of the waves.

Is it the cold shock? The endorphins? The sheer smugness of telling people you did it? Who knows. Science is still out. All I know is I came out of that water feeling about 40% more sorted than I went in.

But @paulbeeson_mindcakepod still won’t try it.

🚨 INCOMING CUSHION ALERT 🚨

Another one off the production line. Meet Sid the sloth, who has the exact energy I’m aiming for this week: hanging on, smiling, in no rush whatsoever.

Latch hooking is perfect when my brain won’t sit still. Hands busy, head quiet. Hook, loop, pull, repeat.

So what’s yours? Tell us how you get creative to calm the noise 👇

(And yes, the house is running out of places to put cushions. That’s a problem for future me.)

We need your help.

Paul’s back (Fringe show, baws deep in awards) we got rejected twice in one week, six years since I was told I had six months to live, and back in hospital… infection from his last time 🙄

Oh, and we’re building a genuinely stupid Wheel of Well-Being out of a paper plate. Cold water therapy? Aura reading? Tree hugging? We need your ideas for what goes on it.

In the interests of balance: didn’t make the shortlist for either the Scottish Mental Health Arts Festival or the Independent Podcast Awards this year.

But it’s my 6-year cancer anniversary today, so I’m going out for a meal. Might even have a pudding.

Some days a shortlist matters less than others.
