Pycnopsyche šŸ«¶šŸ» #trichoptera #limnephilidae by @mr_pondweed
From the beginning (spanning ~200 million years ago to 30 mya): caddisflies Helicopsyche borealis, Hydroptila and young Perlesta stonefly, Helicopsyche pupa, Hydropsyche pupa in stone chamber, larval Micrasema wataga, and Ceraclea neffi. #macroinvertebrates #insects #caddisflies by @mr_pondweed
This weekā€™s Appalachian mayfly sightings from the microscope with interesting morphological variations: 3 burrowers Anthopotamus, Ephemera, and Hexagenia; spiny crawler Drunella; heptageniid flatheads Rhithrogena; small minnow mayfly Plauditus dubius; and 1 of my favorites, the primitive and specialized comb-mouthed Ameletus lineatus. #macroinvertebrates #ephemeroptera #aquaticinsects by @mr_pondweed
Late instar transformation in Paragnetina media (Perlidae) and Drunella walkeri (Ephemerellidae) with the spiny biceps collected by folks with #chesapeakemonitoringcooperative #izaakwaltonleague #allianceforthebay #macroinvertebrates #stoneflies #mayflies by @mr_pondweed
Oh you pretty Peltoperlita! (Peltoperla arcuata) the 2-cohort skeletonizer of fallen leaves in clean, forested headwater streams. Shredders accelerate decomposition and turn cellulose and lignins into fats and proteins for FPOM consumers who say the mini poo packet superfood has a somewhat, ā€œnutty flavorā€. As Bowie sings, ā€œLet me make it plain, Homo sapiens need to take care of Peltoperla streamsā€ #insects #macroinvertebrates #aquaticinsects #stoneflies by @mr_pondweed
Yesterday was 64F and witnessed spore discharge off this Ischoderma polypore! A decent day for winter foraging after mild antecedent weather. >> Funky looking oyster mushroom had some Erotylid beetle larvae but enough clean oysters found. > clusters of wild enoki (Flammulina velvet shanks) on dead elm. Never 100% so needed a spore print (often confused with FUNERAL BELLS ā˜ ļø). > A white print means enjoy! A rusty brown print means liver failure! The habitat had lots of white ash deadwood in a moist mossy ravine at my old study sites. Had a hunch for oysters but needed to find the right microclimate. Occurred on downed ash, walnut, beech along the stream corridor. But itā€™s blowing snow and 21F right nowā€¦. #fungi #foragingmushrooms #streamecology #forestecology by @mr_pondweed
Hope you had a Merry Chiros #chironomid #orthocladiinae and thank you @aquaticentomology for a #tanypodinae key chain I didnā€™t know that I needed, and to my gen ecology 218 student for the perlid stonefly embroidery! by @mr_pondweed
A little ukulele tune for some water bugs from a local brook around here. They have an affinity for those special little microvelocities in nooks and crannies. Hereā€™s Wormaldia, Prosimulium and Neophylax, a tethered Epeorus exuvia, Malireukus, Baetis tricaudatus, Neoleptophlebia, and Ameletus. #macroinvertebrates #aquaticinsects #ilovemyukulele #caddisflies #mayflies #stoneflies #blackflies by @mr_pondweed
May ā€˜25 Pteronarcys proteus nurtures Parapsyche apicalis. Literally, Parapsyce consumes Pteroā€™s poo-poori across nutrient spiral wavelengths. They live in this >- coldwater habitat mosaic in west PA. Itā€™s one of my favorite spots near this unearthed hemlock root mass. It has the moss-cased caddis Adicrophleps hitchcocki here and this early instar Micrasema sp. with that sweet heptageniid, Cinygmula subaequalis >- thereā€™s a great population of the sporadic and uncommon liverwort-cased Paleagapetus celsus too >- also this systellognathan Sallfly Alloperla imbecillus and >-Northern Pygmy Lanthus parvulus present with palpi pictured. All very sensitive indicator species. >- tossing in a nice West Virginia rainbowšŸŒˆ for color. #aquaticinsects #macroinvertebrates by @mr_pondweed
Some #caddisfly photos Iā€™ve been hoarding this year. These all like clean, cool running streams: Lepidostoma, Goera stylata, Phylocentropus carolinus, Pycnopsyche spp., Rhyacophila fuscula, and a spent Neophylax case with peeking Leuctra stonefly. #macroinvertebrates #aquaticentomology by @mr_pondweed
May was for Mayflies. And mushrooms, baby snapping turtles, and strawberries and lettuce and two-lined sallies by @mr_pondweed
