Villa Cubo Stair Detailing
Instead of cables being run horizontally they ran the entirety of the 40 feet vertically between the stair risers. The entirety of the wall adjacent to the stair was an acoustical wall of walnut slats over felt in order to mitigate the sound between floors with the open stairwell. - It's the little details that matter. -Designed and Built by Matthew Segal AIA by @mr_segal

The Arista Residence

You’ll rarely see an exposed cast in place post tensioned concrete single family residence. Why? Concrete can be unforgiving, expensive and require significant advance planning and coordination. With an exposed concrete home you only get one chance to hide electrical , plumbing, and mechanical otherwise you are forced to use soffits to hide your mistakes. There were no unplanned soffits at Arista.

Arista Residence

Two century-old trees defined the geometry from the beginning. The structure was carefully set out to protect their root zones, and the volumes were shaped to allow the trunks and canopies to remain uninterrupted.

Cast-in-place concrete establishes the frame, while warm walnut softens the interior, bringing balance to the material palette. A free-floating kitchen island maintains visual continuity through the space, increasing transparency and reinforcing the connection between interior and landscape.

Photos from the construction of the Goldfinch Residence in a canyon of Mission Hills. Constructed in 2023 to meet city code requirements the structure was nestled into the hillside and stepped up the slope. When finished the Goldfinch Residence was the proud recipient of an AIA honor award from Billie Tsien as the lead juror.
