In 2022, the life of Micah Pietila-Wiggs, a Chula Vista native and star athlete, was tragically cut short. Micah played a key role for the 2013 Chula Vista World Series team and was the son of Steve Wiggs, a board member of the @theAYAFoundation and active leader in the Arts-Rec™️ High School Skateboarding League. In partnership with @neweracap , we are proud to introduce the re-issued 2013 Chula Vista World Series on-field cap for the first time ever. 100% of the proceeds from the sale of this cap will be donated to the Micah Wiggs Foundation. Since 2002, I have been at Bonita Vista High School for 20 years as a teacher and Academic Interventions Coordinator. From 1994-2008, I coached swim & dive, and water polo as a Baron.

After more than two decades, I’m starting a new chapter…. I am now a Mar Vista Mariner! 🔱💚💛

I’ve accepted a position as the School Pool Facilitator (Aquatics Director) at Mar Vista High School in Imperial Beach.

This opportunity feels a little like coming home. I spent almost half of my life surfing Imperial Beach and even lived there for three years. I’ve always had a connection to IB, and now I’m very excited to be working with a new group of students and staff while having the opportunity to serve a community that I am already very familiar with. Also, looking forward to working with one of my family’s closest friends, Robby Hughes!

BVHS has been a huge part of my life, and I’ll always be grateful for the people, relationships, and experiences that came with those years. But sometimes you know when it’s time to turn the page.

To everyone who supported, encouraged, and believed in me throughout this move, you know who you are, THANK YOU!!! It means more than you know.

Looking forward to new challenges, new relationships, and the next chapter!

Our friendship with Joe and Jenn wasn’t just friendship, it became family.

We all go back 35+ years, back to our high school days. Joe, Ronne, and I served for multiple terms together on the Eastlake Youth Football and Cheer Board. Jenn, Ronne, and I worked side by side at Bonita Vista High School; our offices nearly connected in the main office. We’ve traveled together, celebrated together, had many sushi nights, and watched our families grow. Joe and Jenn loved our family, and we loved theirs.

For years, Joe had Ronne and her dad as the Tournament Directors for the CIFSD Soccer Championships, and in 2026 he asked me to be the Tournament Director for the CIFSDS Swim & Dive Championships. It meant a lot to me. It showed he trusted me.

In 30+ years of coaching high school swim and water polo, Joe was the best CIF Commissioner, but he was an even better person.

He always answered the phone. If he couldn’t talk, he’d call back quickly and say, “I’m busy but I’ll call you back when I free up.” I’d feel bad because I knew he was a busy man, but he’d always reply, “Never feel bad for calling. I’ll always answer your calls.” That was Joe. He made everyone feel heard, valued, and important.

The other day, Jenn’s mom asked me to tell her a good memory of Joe. I stopped for a moment, and realized my answer was simple, “Every memory I have of Joe is a good memory, and an even better story. I mean that without exaggeration.”

As Paul Rudy mentioned on Wednesday, Joe made decisions as CIF Commissioner based on what he believed was in the best interest of the kids. The popular decision wasn’t always the best decision.” Joe had the courage to understand the difference. That is something I will carry with me for the rest of my coaching career and life.

I’ll miss his smile, laugh, big hugs, and I’ll miss the way he glowed when he walked into a room. There was just something about his presence. You knew when Joe was there.

Rest in love, Joe. Thank you for the friendship, the memories, and for loving our family.

It’s hard to believe that it’s been 27 years of marriage and 37 years since our story first began.

We were just kids when we met. I remember looking at you then and thinking you were the most beautiful girl I had ever seen. Thirty-seven years later, I still look at you and see that same beautiful girl, only now I see so much more. I see the woman who has shared a lifetime with me. My wife, my best friend, and the person who has stood beside me through everything life has thrown our way.

We have had our peaks and valleys, incredible memories, difficult times, laughter and tears. But through it all, somehow, we kept choosing each other. We stayed by each other’s side when things were easy, and more importantly, when they weren’t. I think that’s what makes what we have so special. I can’t imagine this life with anyone else.

They say some things get better with age. I believe we are one of those things.

Happy 27th Anniversary, Ronne. Here’s to us, to 37 years together, and to every chapter we still have left to write.

Today is Micah’s birthday. ❤️

As his dad, there are some days when the words just don’t seem big enough to describe how much I love and miss my son.

Today is one of those days.

We celebrate Micah every single day. He is part of our conversations, our memories, our stories, and our hearts. But twice a year, we gather with the people who loved him to honor his life, and his memory.

Micah’s birthday is a reminder that we were blessed to have him in our lives. And January 22, his angelversary reminds us just how deeply he is missed.

Every heavenly birthday we start at Glen Abbey, where his Uncle Lance leads a beautiful prayer and blessing, then we gather together to do what Micah would want us to do—be together. We smile, laugh, and reminisce. There are always some tears too, but most of all, there is always LOVE. Somewhere in all of these moments, I feel my son.

He lives in the people he loved, in the friendships he made, in the stories we continue to tell, and in the smiles that happen when someone says his name.

I wish more than anything that I could celebrate his birthday with him here so I could hug him, hear his voice, see his smile, and tell him how proud I am to be his dad.
There is a part of me that will always ache for that. But today, I won’t just mourn the years we didn’t get, I’ll celebrate the years we did.

Happy Birthday, Micah.

I love you more than words could ever explain. I miss you every day, and I always will. But I promise you this: we will keep saying your name, telling your stories, and carrying your memory.

Until I see you again, keep watching over us.

Got back on the hill this morning as part of my training. Getting in the best shape of my life with the help of my triathlon coach, Bryan Monzon, and with the support of my wife and son. My overall mental and physical health is my top priority. Would like to enjoy this life as long as I can.
