Step through The Portal: why reform isn’t enough—it’s time to transform.

Earlier this week, we held our official public launch at The Forum. It was brilliant to see so many families, educators, and young people engaging in deep, meaningful conversations about the future of learning. If you missed it, don’t worry—the launch was simply our first step into the public sphere.

As Sir Ken Robinson famously highlighted, education doesn’t need reform around the edges—it needs a complete transformation. We are pushing for a genuine paradigm shift: moving away from 19th-century, top-down schooling toward a democratic model where young people have real agency, rights, and a say in how their learning happens.

To ensure our direction stays directly aligned with what young people actually want, our next step is creating a dedicated young person’s forum.

Rather than locking ourselves into a single, static school building, we are setting up a network of localized education hubs. From studying natural science directly in a nature reserve at Blackwater Carr to exploring urban spaces with the Norwich Community Land Trust, we are creating flexible, real-world learning fit for the 21st century.

We are building a community-owned alternative from the ground up.

To find out more, search up The Portal Norfolk online to find our website, see what you think, and find out how to get involved.

Nor-folk get involved in grassroots educational system change

The secret of change is to focus all of your energy, not on fighting the old, but on building the new.

The Portal

Learn to live. Live to learn.

The Portal is an upcoming, community-owned learning space in Norfolk for young people aged 4 to 18. We offer a fresh, practical approach to education where young people co-design their own learning alongside supportive mentors; gaining real life skills and confidence at their own pace.

Our Vision

Every young person deserves an environment where they feel understood, valued and encouraged. We know that standard classroom settings don't work for every young person. The Portal is being built to offer a welcoming alternative—a place where learning is practical, hands-on, and tailored to whatever each student actually needs to thrive.

Working closely with staff, parents, and community mentors, every young person will build their own personal Living and Learning Plan. Rather than focusing on high-pressure testing, we focus on real-world skills, practical projects and helping young people find their passion and direction in life. We aim to ensure all our children and young people acquire all the necessary basic skills as they would if they were attending a mainstream school.

Owned by the Community, Governed Together

The Portal is currently in its setup phase as an FCA-registered Community Benefit Society. We are introducing the initiative to the public at our official launch event on 22 September at The Forum in Norwich, aiming to be fully operational by Summer 2027.

Being a Community Benefit Society means we are legally owned by the local community, not private shareholders. Every resource we build stays locked in trust for the public good, ensuring this space belongs to local families for generations to come.

One of the great benefits of The Portal being a Community Benefit Society is it has to be FULLY democratic. We have a clearly defined structure which means everyone involved in The Portal has an equal voice, including our children and young people

Book a ticket for our launch event 22nd Sept at the Forum
