NGP statement on the approval
of the Jackdaw gas field:

The government’s decision to approve the Jackdaw gas field is an act of climate vandalism that will make no meaningful reduction in household energy bills.

Approving new drilling at Jackdaw doesn’t equal a reduction in energy bills, while investment in renewables and insulation can help bring bills down. Gas extracted from the North Sea is sold at prices linked to international markets, leaving local residents exposed to sky-high energy costs. Lasting energy security comes from rapid renewable expansion and insulating our homes, not further reliance on expensive fossil fuels.

Climate breakdown knows no borders. Across the world, vulnerable communities are suffering unprecedented devastation, while here in Norfolk we face accelerating coastal erosion, flash flooding, and extreme heat. Continuing to extract new fossil fuels directly worsens this global emergency while putting our own region at risk. We believe fossil fuels should stay in the ground.

While Norwich works towards net zero, national decisions like Jackdaw sacrifice genuine climate action for short-term corporate gain. We call on ministers to act for the common good: reverse this decision immediately and invest in affordable clean energy and home retrofits for our communities.

Green City Councillors took action this week on the Labour government’s cruel welfare reform bill, which will make it harder for people to access PIP, the main disability benefit.

The government’s own figures show their plans will:

😔push at least 250,000 people (including 50,000 children) into poverty.
😔reduce equality for disabled people

At a meeting of the council Green councillors took action and ensured that the council will call on the government to:

🔎commission an independent risk assessment on the impacts
👂🏻consult on the reforms
💪🏻remove all elements evidenced as causing harm

👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻This Green amendment to a Labour motion was unanimously passed by all councillors

Cllr @lucyfrancesgalvin, proposer of the amendment, said: “I am glad that Labour councillors agreed to accept in full the Green changes to their motion, which originally did not go nearly far enough in outlining the potential harm or callling for action. We all need to stand together including our Norwich MPs to oppose this cruel bill. The books cannot be balanced on the backs of the youngest and those already struggling to live with disabilities

@endchildpovertyuk @cpag_uk @jrf_uk

Labour’s motion was titled “Reforming Benefits and Support to Get Britain Working”

The Green Amendment (accepted in full by Labour):

7) To write to the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions urging that they note, on behalf of the government, the following points, and before the bill comes to parliament to request a written response on how they plan to mitigate these impacts:

• the Government impact assessment on its health and disability benefit reforms shows there will be an estimated additional 250,000 people (including 50,000 children) in relative poverty after housing costs in 2029/30 as a result of the changes;
• the Government equalities assessment says that “although the package aims to redistribute spend, it does reduce spend overall as well. This means that the average loss for families losing will be greater than the average gain for families gaining…Disability benefits are provided to help people with the additional costs of living with a disability and through this

🌊 River Wensum Contamination — What’s Going On?

A shocking discovery: #Fipronil — a flea treatment for pets — has been found in the River Wensum at levels 5x higher than safe (US) guidelines 😟

While not confirmed, this could be from dogs swimming in the river and washing it off. These chemicals risk harming aquatic life by disrupting the food chain from the very bottom up.

🎥 Our Green Cllr @mrgchampion speaks up about the issue and how we can act:

✅ Support the motion for designated bathing water status
✅ Push for more testing to expose pollutants
✅ Hold Anglia Water and government to account
✅ Protect our health AND our wildlife
✅ Expedite safe-swimming applications for known spots like Anderson’s Meadow

🗓️ The Council votes on this 25 June 2025 — let’s make sure they know this matters. People are already swimming here. Let’s make it safe, clean, and accountable.

📢 Session announcement: Resisting militarism in Britain and beyond - with Sophie Bolt @cnd_uk and Norwich Cllr Gary Champion @mrgchampion

The British government has turbo-charged its militarism, whipping up international tensions to justify huge hikes in military spending whilst cutting vital benefits for disabled people and threatening deeper cuts to public services. Spending billions on lethal weaponry makes the world more dangerous. And won’t kick-start the failing British economy, as Chancellor Rachel Reeves argues.

Join us to discuss the far-reaching implications of this dangerous rise in militarism and how we help organise the broad and growing opposition to it.

SAT 10 MAY, 10am - 5.15pm (doors open at 9.30am)
