I'm excited to share that my book, Machine Dreams: Race, Robots, and the Asian American Body, is forthcoming with Duke University Press @dukeuniversitypress in May 2027!

This project has been a very long labor of love, and there are so many people and institutions to thank (the acknowledgments are v. long for a reason!). For now, I'm especially grateful to my extraordinary editor Ken Wissoker @kwiss, assistant editor Alejandra Mejia, and former assistant editor Ryan Kendall for their guidance, encouragement, and support on the book project, making it possible.

Although Machine Dreams is a scholarly monograph, it brings theory into conversation with forms of creative writing, including poetry, fiction, memoir, and screenplay.

I'm sharing flyers from two courses I taught that helped shape this project which includes Machine Dreams, which I taught as a Digital Practice Fellow in English at Harvard, and my first Race and Robots course at UC Berkeley while I was a PhD student in Ethnic Studies and New Media Studies.

It's been a long journey with this book, and I hope Machine Dreams helps us ask and answer critical questions about technology, race, embodiment, and robots together toward better and more just futures. by @mrheeloy

I gave a few talks this year, but participating in the Vera List Center’s exhibition panel on Robert Rauschenberg’s 1970 Surface Series from Currents at Wollman Hall was immensely special to me. This short talk marked the start of a new visual art research project exploring the 1960s New York milieu of Asian American artists. by @mrheeloy

It was such a pleasure celebrating How to Exi(s)t: A Poet's Memoir by cherished San Francisco poet and artist Truong Tran, published by radical & visionary City Lights @citylightsbooks with Joseph O. Legaspi at the beautiful Rizzoli Bookstore @rizzolibookstore in New York. Truong also gave a moving artist talk for Arts Writing @newschoolwriting at The New School.

Special thanks to Nik Azaran at Rizzoli Bookstore for generously hosting us, to @lorilynnserena and Stacey Lewis for all their support, @posmanbooks, and especially our incredible MFA @newschoolwriting and media graduate students, whose presence made these events immensely generative and special.

Congratulations Truong! ✨✨ taken in Rizzoli Bookstore by @mrheeloy

Arts Writing @newschoolwriting is honored and excited to welcome Mark Alice Durant @saintlucybooks to campus for a conversation with Robert Polito @politorobert celebrating their highly anticipated books, Confessions of a Working Class Artist and After the Food.

The program will explore poetry, cinema, music, class, and the future of arts publishing. We’ll reflect on the generative convergences between Robert Polito’s and Mark Alice Durant’s practices, both of which have inspired my own work, from Robert’s founding of the MFA program at @newschoolwriting and his nonfiction series at @graywolfpress to Mark’s work with Saint Lucy Books, whose inspiring interventions in arts writing and publishing span film, biography, poetry, and photography.

A light reception to welcome @saint_lucy_books follows the program.

With many thanks to our cosponsor, Photography MFA @parsonsmfaphoto and to Associate Director Lori Lynn Turner @lorilynnserena for her support.

Please join us! Registration link below.

A deeply moving conversation and stunningly resonant moderation on the political and artistic interventions of Nepali art collective @artreenepal with designer @prabalgurung for @veralistcenter @parsonsschoolofdesign.

Truly, it was one of the most profound and beautifully insightful panels I've experienced. Thank you @artreenepal @prabalgurung and VLC for bringing such vital dialogues to our campus. by @mrheeloy

Please join us for a special book launch at @rizzolibookstore this Thursday evening, celebrating poet and artist Truong Tran (@truongtranart ) and his new book, How to Exi(s)t: A Poet’s Memoir, just published by City Lights Books (@citylightsbooks ).

I’m very happy to be a conversation partner alongside poet, author of Amphibian, and manager of the Pulitzer Prizes, Joseph O. Legaspi.

On Friday, Truong will discuss his art practice and his new book on The New School campus with Arts Writing (@newschoolwriting). He will also discuss issues of queerness and resistance through poetry and memoir.

I hope you can join us for these two special events in New York, celebrating Truong's powerful and exquisite writing and West Coast queer Asian Am diasporic poetics that transcends borders and time.

Special thanks to Stacey Lewis @citylightsbooks Lori Lynn Turner @lorilynnserena @newschoolwriting and Rizzoli @rizzolibookstore staff Acudus and Emma for making these special events possible.

About How to Exi(s)t: A Poet’s Memoir:

How to Exi(s)t: A Poet’s Memoir is an experiment in nonlinear autobiography by Truong Tran, author of the American Book Award–winning Book of the Other. Beginning in the present, at a writing residency in the aftermath of this success, How to Exi(s)t moves back and forth in time through bursts of brief poetic essays grouped by theme.

The duality of the title thematizes a dilemma at the heart of the book: How does a poet separate himself from the academic career to which he has devoted his professional life, and what does being a teacher mean outside of it? by @mrheeloy
