First day of school 2026 ✔️
…
A dozen years of work in art education, my 7th with VUSD and my 4th with the amazing VHS Art Department. I’m teaching four sections of dig photo, an advanced photo section, and my first video production class (DMAC).

Hope you enjoy the beginning > end of the day photos and that everyone has a great new school year! Good luck to all my teacher buddies, we’ve got this. taken in Ventura High School by @ms_morefield

Bret and I went on a week long road trip through Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina this summer following a friend’s wedding in Zagreb. It was my first time back to the Balkans in 8 years, the last time being the last time I taught with @wanderingfilmschool. It’s honestly taken me forever to get through these photos from the trip because it’s taken awhile to unpack it all. It was so special to reunite with so many people and places I love, to show Bret what this place means to me, and to also just see things from a new view on the road. Enjoy a few favorite frames out of many captured and even more experienced. Always a good time. Never enough time. Until next time 🇭🇷 🇧🇦

A few quick frames from today’s roasty toasty field trip to the @gettymuseum with the @venturahscougars photo classes 📸

Shot on my phone using @phomophotosuite because the students had all the cameras as per usual (as they should). Great photo exhibit and still managed to enjoy the gardens still despite the temps. Thanks to the staff, chaperones, and students who made it happen!

From last week’s after school collaboration and test shoot with fellow photo educator @emmet_cullen11 📸

Studio lighting is not at all my comfort zone (I’m solidly a natural light portraiture gal) but it was fun trying out some borrowed gear, playing around with some @godox_global lights, and getting some fresh frames and ideas for my classes.

A humbling reminder that I need to feed my photo/artist side and prioritize my own continued learning! Always so much more to learn and practice. Thanks Mr Cullen and BHS Commercial Photo! taken in Ventura, California by @ms_morefield

Nostalgia: A wistful or excessively sentimental yearning for a past period, person, or situation.

Life milestones like high school graduation are an opportunity to reflect on memories of times gone by. What are this year’s graduating seniors nostalgic about? What people, places, and things will they miss? What memories are they taking with them into their future after high school? Seniors from the digital photo, advanced photo, and digital art and design classes from Ventura High School respond in this exhibit.

Shot these to finish a student’s roll one handed towards the end of our @venturahscougars advanced photo walk while ushering students back to school and carrying a giant bag of stuff.

New donated camera from @emmet_cullen11 (thank you!!!), no light metering. Not too shabby. Gotta get back to it. If you scroll down really deep here you can find what I used to shoot. Here’s to the return once my students stop borrowing all my cameras.

Photographic leftovers 📸

Trying out new gear, test shots before working a gig, half baked concepts, times I picked up a camera this year intending to get out and take some pictures and then for one reason or another not taking more than the one shot.

What remains from the last year is here. Feeling the usual creative burnout I do this time of the school year, which usually makes me feel ehh about photographing.

Reminding myself that it’s a practice - the energy ebbs and flows, not all days and seasons are equal. As long as you keep the practice up, you eventually return. Keep on keeping on. taken in Ventura, California by @ms_morefield

This year’s @naea_arteducators convention felt extra special. It marked the end of an era for me - this chapter of Connected Arts Network - @allartscan - comes to a close in June.

It was a huge honor to be recognized alongside some truly incredible colleagues and friends who I have worked alongside the last four years on the main stage.

These amazing arts educators from around the country who did not know each other showed up month after month, year after year to support each other, care for one another, and work together towards a better future for arts education for our kids, our colleagues, and each other. I am grateful to know them and to stand beside them.

CAN has been a transformational program for me, one that has demanded me to step up and out of my comfort zone to speak up, try new things, and become a better teacher and leader.

In the duration of my time with CAN, I published my first academic paper, presented at numerous state and national conferences, developed curricular tools and tips for a nationally circulated toolkit, and led PLCs of media art teachers from around the country. They even got me to speak on a podcast.

I am most proud of how this national perspective helped me to more confidently step into leadership roles at home. Since CAN, I have become a cooperating teacher, induction mentor, adjunct professor, and a leader for two of our larger local student art shows. I was especially grateful to attend this year’s convention with my local arts team and my own mentor, who have supported me day in and day out.

So much gratitude and a huge congrats to my amazing fellow CAN Teacher Leaders, especially my CA CAN Crew, my PLC co-facilitator Tim, and our own incredible leaders Amy, Kendall, Dennis, and the National Content Managers who made this program possible for us all. Thank you to all the wonderful arts educators I have connected with through this process, especially our CAN Media Arts PLC members. I am a better educator because of you.

This chapter is coming to a close, but I know this program and the people within it will continue create ripple effects of positive change in the field for years to come. Thank you CAN. taken in Chicago, Illinois by @ms_morefield

Proud to be presenting this year alongside my @allartscan colleagues - Rachael Harrison and Frank Juarez (@frankjuarezartist).
