PUSO welcomes and celebrates Filipino American History Month! 🇵🇭🇺🇲

PUSO celebrates the richness and unity of our cultures, and we highlight the impactful contributions, stories, and experiences of our Filipino community in the healthcare field, including Dr. Fe del Mundo, who founded the first pediatric hospital in the Philippines (featured on the left of our graphic).

We also highlight the invaluable contributions of labor leaders like Larry Itliong, regarded as "one of the Fathers of the West Coast labor movement". Larry Itliong (featured on the right of our graphic) was among those who fought for fair and equal wages for farm workers, and whose impacts are felt even to this day.

October is chosen as Filipino American History Month as this marks the anniversary of the first recorded presence of Filipinos in the continental United States, on October 18, 1587, at what is now Morro Bay, California. In 2006, California formally recognized the celebration, and in 2009, the U.S. Congress officially recognized October as Filipino American History Month.

Throughout history, we as a Filipino community have had numerous triumphs and successes, but also had and continue to have challenges even to this day that we still face and have yet to overcome.
Even as this may be, we continue to move forward, as a people of hope, of strength, united and guided by our spirit of Bayanihan and pakikipag-kapwa tao, uplifting our communities and our voices, because we are Filipino, in thoughts, words, and deeds.

Congratulations to @tucomcalifornia Student Doctors Ashley Cao, Gabrielle Chan, and Jenna Levin on being selected for this year’s Albert Schweitzer Fellowship Program!

As we celebrate this year’s fellows, we’re also highlighting the impact of past recipient Dr. Yasmin Bains (DO Class of 2021, @msmhs_tuc Class of 2016), who partnered with Dr. Hiroe Imai Hu (DO Class of 2020) to create a curriculum focused on Asian American adolescent mental health and well-being.

The Office of Campus Engagement and Community Affairs (CECA) in collaboration with Pilipino United Students Organization (PUSO) at Touro University California invite ALL Students, Faculty, and Staff to our Filipino Student Panel: "Magkaisa Tayo - United as One in Our Filipino Culture, Identity and Heritage", in celebration of October as Filipino American History Month 🇵🇭

The panel discussion will be held on Thursday, October 1, 2026 from 12 to 1 pm in the OCA Room at Farragut Inn.

Hear from student leaders share about their interest in health care, career aspirations, advice for TUC students, community issues, and what gives them hope for the future.

✨ Starting strong, serving together.

Before classes even begin, more than 400 incoming TUC students kicked off their journey yesterday by giving back through TUC Day of Service 2026, volunteering at 14 nonprofit organizations across Solano County. ❤️

“I often reflect on how much of an honor it is to train in the same city that I was raised in, which is not the experience of many. The same areas I grew up seeing look different now, but the same in some ways.

Right along the waterfront is where my grandfather and uncles would play card games with their friends, and it’s the same area I drive past daily on my commute to school. The streets I used to drive past to get to my grandmother’s house in South Vallejo are now streets I know that are home to unhoused community members who have beautiful personalities and complex stories.

I’ve been able to interact with the community as both a community member and as a future physician and health advocate that considers the structures and barriers that have become much more visible over my couple of years of medical and public health training.”

🏡❤️ Raised in Vallejo and now training to serve it, two-time @tourocalifornia alumna and @tucomcalifornia student Destany Michael (@mphtuc Class of 2023, @msmhs_tuc Class of 2024) is transforming a lifelong connection into a lifelong commitment to care, advocacy, and service!
