PUSO welcomes and celebrates Filipino American History Month! 🇵🇭🇺🇲

PUSO celebrates the richness and unity of our cultures, and we highlight the impactful contributions, stories, and experiences of our Filipino community in the healthcare field, including Dr. Fe del Mundo, who founded the first pediatric hospital in the Philippines (featured on the left of our graphic).

We also highlight the invaluable contributions of labor leaders like Larry Itliong, regarded as "one of the Fathers of the West Coast labor movement". Larry Itliong (featured on the right of our graphic) was among those who fought for fair and equal wages for farm workers, and whose impacts are felt even to this day.

October is chosen as Filipino American History Month as this marks the anniversary of the first recorded presence of Filipinos in the continental United States, on October 18, 1587, at what is now Morro Bay, California. In 2006, California formally recognized the celebration, and in 2009, the U.S. Congress officially recognized October as Filipino American History Month.

Throughout history, we as a Filipino community have had numerous triumphs and successes, but also had and continue to have challenges even to this day that we still face and have yet to overcome.
Even as this may be, we continue to move forward, as a people of hope, of strength, united and guided by our spirit of Bayanihan and pakikipag-kapwa tao, uplifting our communities and our voices, because we are Filipino, in thoughts, words, and deeds.

Happy Filipino American History Month!!

TUC College of Osteopathic Medicine Student Doctors Destany Michael and Pooja Mhatre saw an opportunity to address a critical gap in health education and turned it into action through MenoWell Vallejo.

In this conversation with Andrea Garcia, Vice President of Advancement and Director of Campus Engagement & Community Affairs, they share how they’re building community, increasing menopause literacy, and creating meaningful support for women throughout Vallejo.

📢 LAST CALL for Volunteers!

Hello everyone,

Reposting our call for volunteers for Pistahan this weekend - we are still in need of volunteers; deadline to sign up is TONIGHT!

PUSO (Pilipino United Students Organization) is in need of volunteers to help out at the upcoming Pistahan in SF, an annual Filipino festival held at Yerba Buena Gardens in San Francisco.
This is part of PUSO's efforts of providing compassionate and inclusive care as well as timely and comprehensive education, outreach, and education to our local communities.

For the Pistahan event, we will be partnering this year with Kaiser Permanente San Francisco physicians at their health booth during the festival, with tasks like registering patients, handling what they're calling "the KP Passport", as well as providing educational pamphlets/booklets, and handling prize giveaways.
It was a great and fun experience last year!

We are in need of volunteers for SUNDAY AUGUST 9TH, from 10AM-4PM.
You do not have to be Filipino to volunteer, and you do not have to stay the whole time; please do let us know what time / for how long you are able to volunteer.

Kaiser does have a limit in the number of volunteers, but we can coordinate and plan volunteer shifts depending on the responses from you all that we receive.
We are coordinating rides, and rides/transportation will be dependent on how many student volunteers will be able to assist for the event.
Kaiser Permanente will also be giving shirts and other giveaways to the volunteers who will be helping out at their booth.

Please reply to this message, or email tuc.puso@student.touro.edu if you are able to volunteer and/or want more info!
Feel free to DM us as well if you have any questions!

(*P.S. There is also an event happening on Saturday August 8th, but since this is on a Saturday, the Sabbath day and TUC is a Jewish institution, we are unable to participate collectively as a club; if you are interested individually, feel free to ask about Saturday as well)

✨ Starting strong, serving together.

Before classes even begin, more than 400 incoming TUC students kicked off their journey yesterday by giving back through TUC Day of Service 2026, volunteering at 14 nonprofit organizations across Solano County. ❤️

Help us welcome the newest members of the TUC family! 🙌
