The South has given me so many things to love. But one thing I wish we could leave behind? The stigma around sexual health education and HIV.

For too long, conversations about sex and HIV have been taboo in Southern communities. But silence doesn’t protect us. HIV treatment and prevention does.

On this Southern HIV/AIDS Awareness Day, I’m reflecting on what it means to love the South while also challenging the parts of our culture that can keep us from having the conversations we need to have.
