Hot dishes and hotter takes on the Twin Cities dining scene from @mspmag
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Big beefy news for south-metro Baldamar fans, @smithson_steak, from the same owners Sharon and Randy Stanley, is opening at @southdalecenter in Edina this weekend. Giving a “London steakhouse” touch, the interior is all dark walnut and Carrara marble and ivory crown molding.

Despite all-time high beef prices, steakhouses are back big-time, and all the steaks at Smithson are aged for 40 days and 40 nights, an auspicious amount of time for the meat to tenderize. The menu ranges from a 12-ounce Australian full-blood Wagyu, to Chilean sea bass in miso butter, to a rich ricotta gnocchi. See the full sneak peek of the space and menu at the link in our bio. 🥩🍷

Inside tiny Band Box Diner, chef-owner Brad Ptacek stands behind the counter flipping 16 strips of bacon, crisps up some boiled red potatoes, cracks some eggs, and pours a fat old diner pancake that’s a little crisp and a little salty and plenty soft and fresh.

Nearly 90 years old, this historic little diner sits on the edge of downtown Minneapolis. You can see the iconic red and white exterior in the Mighty Ducks movies, and in 2007, Brother Ali shoots the video for his hit “Take Me Home” with significant scenes in and around the Band Box.

But its the people inside that tell a story of old-school Minneapolis—Robert Rosebear, an Anishinaabe sculptor collected by museums (his usual was Band Box eggs), trans Vietnam vet Paula Hare (burgers), and a couple of former rock stars (afternoon breakfast). If you can’t afford a ticket to Tokyo but are on the hunt for taiyaki, head to @taizo.taiyaki, from Hide Tozawa, the chef behind south Minneapolis’s Okome House and Nokko, on Nicollet Avenue in Minneapolis!

These snacky little fishes, called taiyaki, originated in Tokyo, Japan, in 1909. They’re stuffed with earthy-sweet red bean paste, or Nutella, or an especially melty combination of Spam and cheese. Tozawa’s taiyaki isn’t strictly traditional: He’s using a rice flour blend for the batter that’s gluten-free (as are all of the fillings). He’s also experimenting with flavor as they continue to develop the restaurant’s menu.

Jenny Nguyen grew up in Brooklyn Park, making classic phin-filter Vietnamese coffee for her immigrant parents before they headed to work in the morning. In 2021, she and her husband, Savio Nguyen, opened Linden Hills’ @caphinmpls to bring Vietnamese coffee culture to Minnesota, and eventually added a second location in the Kickernick Building downtown.

“We import coffee from Vietnam and custom-roast it here. It’s a 50-50 robusta and arabica blend that gives people a chance to experience authentic Vietnamese coffee in a way that’s very rare in America,” says Jenny. From traditional phin-filter to pandan lattes, take in the fragrance of the slowly dripping coffee at Càphin to start your mornings.

Many people know @northernfirespizza as a star of the Mill City and Nokomis farmers’ markets, where owner Arie Peisert rigs up his wood-fired pizza trailer, but it’s worth seeking out the Lake Nokomis–area flagship, the tiniest wood-fired-pizza shop in south Minneapolis. There you’ll find Caesars that taste like they sprang from the salad station at Chez Panisse; smoky, oak-fired chicken wings; lemonades and cinnamon cannoli; and pizza, of course, the tangy sourdough crust made from a blend of three freshly milled Baker’s Field flours.

Peisert pairs his crust is with ingredients from local farmers and producers, creating flavors bigger in every dimension. “I love cooking only on wood,” Peisert says. “A lot of people think that’s why they love our pizza. But it’s the ingredients. There’s only so much a chef can do, honestly. If we’re both going to make a pizza, and I have my ingredients and you have white flour and factory farm cheese, even if you are the greatest chef in the world, I’m making a better pizza.” Read more about Northern Fires and find who else made it on our best pizza list in the Twin Cities, at the link in our bio.

French Meadow Bakery and Cafe, a cornerstone restaurant of Lyndale Avenue for the past four decades, has closed after a rocky sale to a new owner. (Don’t worry, St. Paul, the Grand Avenue location remains open.) The closure comes shortly after that of The Lowry and Red Cow, which spent 15 and 10 years on Hennepin Avenue, respectively. Other key restaurant and retail spaces, like Burch Steak, Via’s Vintage, and Rudolph’s Bar-B-Que, have sat empty for a while now.

It does appear that a new restaurant, Azia Luna, is readying to open in the former Red Cow space; meanwhile construction on Lyndale is set to begin in 2028, burdening businesses along the avenue. But dream big with us for a minute: Barriers aside, with so many core spaces vacant, what do you want to see open on the Hennepin and Lyndale corridors? More dispensaries, a la Orange Theory? 😉 Sound off in the comments.

@onohawaiianplates has evolved from a pop-up to a food hall stand to a kitchen at United Noodles, and now bloomed into a new restaurant in Minneapolis’s North Loop, in the former Guacaya Bistreaux spot along Washington Avenue. The space is complete with a flashy-fun bar program, a plentiful plate lunch menu, and a sandbox that is both kid- and adult-friendly. Go stake your spot and claim your fishbowl cocktail!
