Eat Street’s Black Forest Inn is home to a famous photograph with an infamous backstory. As local legend has it, photography icon Richard Avedon frequented the German bar and restaurant during his gigantic 1970 show at Mia, loving it (and owner Erich Christ) so much that at the end of his Minneapolis stay, he gifted 6’x8 print of his work The Generals of the Daughters of the American Revolution to Erich.

But not everyone was pleased with the gift: Sixteen years later, in 1986, frequent (and loathed) bar patron Ellis Nelson came into the Black Forest at lunch, took a revolver out of his coat pocket, and shot the photo twice before walking out of the restaurant and turning himself in at the police station. “My parents thought, Well, this is it; nobody’s going to want to come here anymore,” Erica says. “And you know what? The next day, there was a line of people down the block. People saw it on the news, and they wanted to come see it for themselves.” The Christs never repaired the print, and to this day, it hangs behind the bar, bullet holes and all, attracting visitors from all over that have heard a story just wild enough to be true.

Big beefy news for south-metro Baldamar fans, @smithson_steak, from the same owners Sharon and Randy Stanley, is opening at @southdalecenter in Edina this weekend. Giving a “London steakhouse” touch, the interior is all dark walnut and Carrara marble and ivory crown molding.

Despite all-time high beef prices, steakhouses are back big-time, and all the steaks at Smithson are aged for 40 days and 40 nights, an auspicious amount of time for the meat to tenderize. The menu ranges from a 12-ounce Australian full-blood Wagyu, to Chilean sea bass in miso butter, to a rich ricotta gnocchi. See the full sneak peek of the space and menu at the link in our bio. 🥩🍷

Inside tiny Band Box Diner, chef-owner Brad Ptacek stands behind the counter flipping 16 strips of bacon, crisps up some boiled red potatoes, cracks some eggs, and pours a fat old diner pancake that’s a little crisp and a little salty and plenty soft and fresh.

Nearly 90 years old, this historic little diner sits on the edge of downtown Minneapolis. You can see the iconic red and white exterior in the Mighty Ducks movies, and in 2007, Brother Ali shoots the video for his hit “Take Me Home” with significant scenes in and around the Band Box.

But its the people inside that tell a story of old-school Minneapolis—Robert Rosebear, an Anishinaabe sculptor collected by museums (his usual was Band Box eggs), trans Vietnam vet Paula Hare (burgers), and a couple of former rock stars (afternoon breakfast). My husband and I came here for date night, and Creekside is one of our go-tos for pop-ups because the food, drinks , service and decor are always good. They have lots of N/A options as well as fun themed drinks and their full dinner menu. Each room is a different theme so be sure to check them all (and the hanging gravestones!)

A gorgeous fall morning drive through the backroads in Superior National Forest looking onward towards Lake Superior.

I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my morning drives through the fall foliage on the North Shore this year. It’s been so special to see the maple, aspen, and birch trees peaking at the same time. I am so grateful for all the beauty we have here in Minnesota. I feel lucky to live in this state😊🍁✨
