What a journey this has been! ✨ From sleepless nights rewriting poems (shoutout to my editor-turned-friend, who pushed me harder than I thought I could handle šŸ˜…) to moments of doubt when I wanted to quit, Between the Line of a Photograph is finally here. šŸ’«

The book launch was beyond incredible, and I’m so grateful to everyone who showed up to celebrate with me. You turned what started as a dream into a reality I’ll cherish forever. šŸ’–

The launch would not have been possible without some truly incredible people:

To @richardalijos who showed up for me last minute—I’m so grateful.
@iamsalamatusule my amazing reviewer, you are absolutely brilliant. Your review was thoughtful and truly captured the heart of my collection. My girl!
To @iampariolodo who planned the entire launch from start to finish—you’re a superstar.
To my dear, dear friend @alago_prince who took the brunt of my panics and still stood by me—you mean the world to me.
To the amazing Nasara Creative team @rehviie @chiytwoola @zainabxele_ @keesh_rowland who turned up for me and held it down—you all made this dream a reality. šŸ’–
And to my amazing guitarist Yenny, who added magic to the day with your incredible talent—I can’t thank you enough. šŸŽø

To my editor, who started as the meanest critic (trust me, I thought so at first šŸ˜†) but became one of my strongest supporters and friends—thank you for pushing me when I needed it most. You’re a huge part of this journey, and I’m so lucky to have had you by my side.

To everyone who couldn’t make it, your love and support still meant the world to me! šŸ’Œ More copies of the book are now available, and I’ll be sharing where you can grab yours soon. šŸ“š

Please enjoy these highlights from the launch! šŸŽ‰ More copies of the book are available, and I’ll share details soon on where you can grab yours.

This is just the beginning—thank you all for being part of my story!

Today, I saw my daddy’s face. I have mostly known my father’s face through old photographs softened by time and poor camera quality. This one was so clear that for a moment, it felt like something in me had been returned. I felt full.

I have so many words for my mother because I grew up with her. I knew her in the ordinary, everyday way that you know someone who raised you. I knew her voice, her moods, her ways. I knew her as my mother. My father, I knew in pockets. I remember how much he loved my mother. I remember that he was grumpy in the mornings (just like I am). I remember that I was his favorite🌚 Jamilan Baba! Some people still call me thatšŸ˜… I remember his smell. I remember how crisp his clothes always were. How he mostly wore white. How sharp he looked. How well he spoke. His deep, rich voice. The way he carried himself. There was something majestic about him. He moved like royalty because, in every sense, he was. But beyond that, he had an aura that made you know he was a man of stature.

Some of what I know about my father, I know from the stories people have told me. And I am grateful that the stories are good ones. I remember him teaching me Suratul Muddathir when I was doing my hifz. I remember being unable to get one line right and seeing him get pissed off with me for the first time. It is such a small memory, but it has stayed. I remember that he provided for us, and for so many more. I wish I had known him longer. I wish I had more ordinary memories. More things that belonged only to us. But I have these little pockets. And I have his name. I pray for him every day. I pray that his good name continues to go with him. That whatever he left behind in this world continues to speak well of him.

And sometimes I think that if I can leave behind even half of the legacy he left behind, even half of the goodness people remember when they speak about him, I would consider myself successful. I would think I had lived well. Today, my favorite nephew sent me a picture of my father, and for the first time in a long time, I could see his face properly. And I was just so happy. My father was a great man!

It felt good to see you again, Baba. Your Jamilaā¤ļø taken in Abuja, Nigeria by @mss_mila

One of my favourite things about reading as a child was that books took me places I had never been to and, at the time, places I was almost certain I would never get the chance to visit.

I could walk through streets in cities I had never heard of, meet people from completely different worlds, imagine what it felt like to live somewhere else. All from the comfort of wherever I happened to be reading.

I think that’s one of the beautiful things about books. They give you access to worlds before life gives you access to them.

And for a child, sometimes that first encounter with a different world is enough to make them curious about what else is possible for them.

That’s why I’ve always believed that putting a book in a child’s hands is about more than giving them something to read…you’re giving them somewhere to go, long before they have the means to get there.

On Saturday, August 29th, we’ll be at Strobrie Café, Garki, from 9AM–5PM for the Farinruwa Book Drive @farinruwafoundation , collecting books to help build a community library and put more stories, ideas and possibilities within the reach of children.

If you have books you’ve outgrown, books sitting on your shelves gathering dust, or books you simply believe another child should have the chance to read, bring them along. ā¤ļø

PS: We’ll have chocolates! šŸ«šŸ˜Š Bring your kids along too. Let them experience the joy of giving, discover how something as simple as a book can open up an entire world, and be part of something that could change a child’s life in ways we may never get to see.šŸ

Two days in a room where the conversations went beyond simply asking for more opportunities for women, and into the harder questions of what makes those opportunities accessible, sustainable and meaningful_ financing, skills, systems, policy, markets, networks and the structures that determine who gets to participate. I had the opportunity to ask questions, listen to perspectives I hadn’t considered, exchange ideas with people doing important work across different sectors, and be part of an awards ceremony celebrating some of the people moving this conversation forward. There was a lot to take away, but one thing is clear_ there is a need to keep asking better questions about what inclusion looks like when we move from intention to implementation.

A few moments from the 2nd National Gender Inclusion conference 2026.ā¤ļø

Looking forward to attending the 2nd National gender inclusion conference 2026 as a founder.

This year’s theme, Designing for Delivery: Financing, Systems and Skills for Women’s Empowerment, is especially relevant to the kind of work we are building at @farinruwafoundation .

I’m looking forward to the conversations, the learning, and the opportunity to connect with others working to create meaningful and sustainable pathways for women and girls.

See you there. šŸ¤

A book you’ve finished could be the book someone else has been waiting for.

This August, Farinruwa Foundation is turning forgotten books into new possibilities as we embark on our Community Library Book Drive.

So, check your shelves. Check those old schoolbooks your children have outgrown. Check the novels you’ve read and probably won’t read again.

If they’re still in good condition, they can find a new home, a new reader, and a new purpose.

Donate a book. Donate several. Help us build a library.

Strobrie Café, Garki

Outside Abuja?
We have collection partners in different parts of Nigeria who will receive your books and help get them to us. Please check our flier for details.

If you’d like to support the project through volunteering, financial contributions, or your skills, kindly reach out to us via our website in bio or call +234 703 6821 654

By the time you read this, a boy may have been killed for what he is or isn’t. A girl severed from wings. Body flushed over the coffee haze of harmattan. The world has always been like that, moving. Walking away from what gives it light. I cannot say I love this life but I love the way a flower opens up to a butterfly. I love the way my eyes turn to catch that moment when my garden softens in their romance. I love the flavored meow of cats. I love how I used to spill into my lover like Hollywood coffee. How, that day, after having the music stain our bones like a fracture, we went back home to wash ourselves clean of songs, yet found our dresses falling off like November leaves—our bodies the only true thing in the room. Forgive my mouth and its broken tongue. It’s been long someone opened to me. It’s been long I spilled into someone. I think the destiny of hearts is to be broken. Morning drops at my front porch already wounded. Like the television and its news, I do not know much about happiness. Sorrow lingers in my breath, stale as day-old liquor. I want to run into night and become a whisper. I want to live inside a room with no doors, no windows, only a mirror and the sharp weight of silence. But this body, this wall is my last bus stop and I must fight. I must approach joy with intent. I must say, c’mon womb-man, fly.
