Baseless claims made by pro-Israel actors in the wake of the Bondi shooting have been left unchecked and amplified by Australian media. This failure of reporting has normalised current attacks on our fundamental civil and political rights.

Just hours ago, NSW Premier Chris Minns flagged that his government could crackdown on protests in response to the Bondi Beach shooting. Meanwhile, the Albanese government is under mounting pressure from lobby groups and political actors using the tragedy to demand the full implementation of the Antisemitism Envoy’s National Action Plan – a measure widely criticised as draconian for shielding Israel from scrutiny by undermining freedom of expression and the right to protest.

A “daring raid.” This ABC post is reflective of Western media coverage that uses euphemisms to downplay the violation of sovereignty and international law committed by the United States against Venezuela.

The U.S. attack has been criticised and condemned by Australian leading human rights and international law experts:

Kenneth Roth, @kenroth.55 , former Human Rights Watch executive director, said on Instagram:

“With no U.N. Security Council authorisation, no military threat from Venezuela that could plausibly justify a claim of self-defence, Trump’s invasion of Venezuela to capture Maduro is a blatant act of aggression.”

Professor Ben Saul, United Nations Special Rapporteur on Human Rights and Counter Terrorism and Challis Chair of International Law, The University of Sydney said on X:

“I condemn the US’ illegal aggression against Venezuela & the illegal abduction of its leader & his wife. Every Venezuelan life lost is a violation of the right to life. President Trump should be impeached & investigated for the alleged killings.”

Curtailing freedom of speech with unfounded claims.

The NSW Parliament is set to pass new hate speech laws today in response to the Bondi massacre. The laws ban protests for up to three months following a terrorist attack as well as Palestinian solidarity chants such as “Globalise the Intifada”.

But NSW Premier Chris Minns has been unable to accurately explain the word intifada or provide factual evidence linking the chant to violence. As explored in this post, this failure was on full display yesterday when AAP reporter Farid Farid asked the Premier to define the term he is seeking to ban.

A broad coalition of community, activist and civil liberty groups, led by the Palestine Action Group Sydney, Jews Against the Occupation 48 and the Blak Caucus, announced this morning that they will be launching a constitutional challenge to the new laws for being anti-protest and undemocratic.

In its June report titled “Erasing Anything Palestinian”, Amnesty International reports that Israeli authorities issued Palestinians living in Area C of the West Bank “fewer than 200 building permits” between 2009 and 2025, while 27,941 housing units were approved in illegal Israeli settlements in 2025 alone.

Israeli human rights organisation B’Tselem states that the Israeli planning and building authorities’ prevention of Palestinian development is “part of a systematic policy of ethnic cleansing in the West Bank”.

In response to Israel’s demolition of Khirbet al-Taban, B’Tselem executive director Yuli Novak said:

“Israel is continuing to erase Palestinian communities at an accelerating pace as part of the ethnic cleansing it is carrying out in the West Bank.”

“The world continues to stand by as Palestinians and their lives are left completely exposed to Israeli violence.”

The UN Human Rights report raised “ethnic cleansing” concerns over Israel’s operations in the three northern West Bank refugee camps, with UN human rights chief Volker Türk stating:
