Civil Art, in partnership with N+ Projects (@nplus_projects), presents Rings of Saturn, a group exhibition at Nick + Sons Bakery (@nickandsonsbakery ) in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. Rings of Saturn is a group exhibition curated by Civil Art’s 2025-2026 Art House Cohort. This curatorial project serves as a platform for artists to position themselves as leaders within their community, providing opportunities and resources for a broader community of artists and friends.

Drawing on the narrative structure of W.G. Sebald’s The Rings of Saturn, this exhibition reflects on accumulation as a universal condition of experience rather than a singular point of origin. Like the slow growth of a tree, form and meaning develop incrementally, layered with traces of what came before. The works gathered here operate through a similar logic: gestures, materials, and images recur through variation within repetition, illuminating the subtle shifts that emerge as ideas move across time, space, and medium. This gradual, accretive growth extends to human life as well, as each person carries a lifetime of stories, gathering memories in layers like the rings of a tree.

Join us on May 16 from 6 - 8 PM for the opening reception.

Maya Strauss is an interdisciplinary painter. She lives in Alphabet City in Manhattan. Everyday, she takes photographs and collects objects and surfaces that seem to have a visual uniqueness. Often the subjects she choses are things that are being overlooked because of their seeming banality, but that she believes hold a specific history within them. She received a BFA from The Cooper Union, and an MFA from the Yale School of Art. Strauss has attended multiple residencies including the Vermont Studio Center, and the Byrdcliffe Guild. She has been included in art exhibitions at Studio e Gallery in Seattle, Warbling Collective in London, MoMa PS1 in Queens and NADA Ceramics in Manhattan. She has had solo exhibitions at Bob’s Gallery and Sweet Lorraine Gallery.

The exhibition also features work by @sadafazadehfar @benjamin.dimock @yokosnoopy Adrian Gray @amadeo_mf @artelliemurphy @katequarfordt @joanreutershan @streetmax21

Ah! I am so excited to be a part of this show curated by Alex Delaney! Link in Bio! Please check it out!

Love what he wrote!:

“Maya’s ceramic works exist on a wide spectrum of functionality, stopping at every possible point between pure form and pure function. But regardless of where exactly they land, there is a fantastic note of playfulness in all of them, and it’s not a playfulness or charm that could be easily replicated in a commercial manner. It exists solely in the singular object she’s created, amongst the flaws and the overlapping strokes of glaze and the wonky edges and the imperfect lettering. I have a totally theoretical dinner party in my head where every guest sits down to a piece from Maya on their plate.”

5. “WITH IN (After Robert Duncan)”, 2025, 83 x 14 inches, oil on burlap, canvas and panel, $80 each or $500 for the set.
6. “My Friend Said a Woman Should Pee in Every Story”, 2025, oil on panel with doll’s leg, 10 x 8 inches, $300. This piece is based on the poem “Tryst” by Billie Chernicoff. I took an online class, through Yellow Chair, with the poet John Yau. Each session he read a poem by a different author and we were instructed to respond to these poems. All of these pieces were produced in this class. A lot of my work is about responding to found objects and creating conversations between objects and images that I have seen. For this piece, I combined a doll’s leg with an image relevant to the descriptions in the poem of lichen and wet wood. @frenproductions @yellowchairsalon @bekagoedde taken in Philmont, New York by @mstrawsy
