An instructor’s day off means more climbing. Nothing like stepping onto untouched rock to keep learning, push yourself and work through a few fears.

Self-rescue and problem-solving fundamentals 🧗

We have practised ascending a rope the hard way - prusiking up and down - before moving onto the slightly easier option, using the mechanical advantage of a GriGri and Petzl handled ascender. I know which method Andrew preferred 😆

But knowing both can save the day when things don’t quite go to plan.

We also covered tying off a belay plate, assisted and unassisted hoists, and worked through different scenarios to understand which method to choose and when.

Then it was out to the crag to put everything into practice.

Drilling in the fundamentals and building solid foundations, ready for the next stage of development and more complex rescue scenarios.

Sadly, a magic wand for changing the weather wasn’t included with my instructor qualification 🪄🌧️

What I can do is make sure you still have a safe, educational and enjoyable day - and come away with new skills to move your climbing forward.

( Sightseeing and a good food was in the "Package" 🤪)

22 FEB - DON’T RUSH HOME
Breakfast, check-out and time to decide what comes next.

Stay longer in Zakopane, or head to Kraków and explore the food, architecture, history and culture. The trip doesn’t have to end when the skiing does.

A big milestone for Mountainspace

We’re officially onboarded with Protected Trust Services (PTS) and have put the appropriate arrangements in place to support our compliance with the Package Travel Regulations.

But what does that actually mean for you?

As we expand Mountainspace and start offering organised adventures in Poland including accommodation, protecting our clients and their money has always been a priority.

For qualifying package holidays, our PTS arrangements provide financial protection for your booking - giving you greater peace of mind when booking your next adventure with us.

It’s another important step in building Mountainspace properly, so that you can focus on the exciting bit:

choosing your next adventure. ⛰️

Poland's mountain adventures coming soon… who's joining?

It’s only Grade 1…

…and nobody else is wearing a helmet.

This is actually a really good question and one that opens up a much bigger conversation about scrambling, risk and decision-making in the mountains

Let's clear up the grading.

Grade 1 describes the technical difficulty of the scrambling terrain. It doesn't mean “safe”, and it certainly doesn't tell you everything you need to know about the risks involved.

A Grade 1 scramble can still involve exposure, loose rock, steep ground and difficult consequences if you slip.

And the situation can change considerably depending on the day.

🌧️ Is the rock wet?
❄️ Is there ice or snow?
🪨 Is the rock loose?
👥 Are there people above you who could dislodge something?
⛰️ What's the exposure like?
👣 What's happening below you?
🧠 How experienced is the group OR HOW NERVOUS?
🎒 What are you carrying?

And then there's the question of equipment.

What we carry in our packs isn't there because we expect something to go wrong. It's there because we're making decisions based on the terrain, conditions, group and consequences.

Sometimes that might mean a helmet.

Sometimes additional equipment.

Sometimes it might mean changing the route, moving more carefully, or deciding that today isn't the day.

That's where mountain skills come in.

Good decision-making isn't simply knowing:

Grade 1 = this

It's being able to look at the situation in front of you and ask:

CONTEXT and CONSEQUENCES

What are the hazards?
How likely are they?
What are the consequences?
How can I manage them?
And what will I do if things change?

And this is one of the things we really want our clients to take away from a day with Mountainspace.

Not just where to put your feet.

Not just which kit to wear.

But how to think for yourself in the mountains.

Because “everyone else is doing it” isn't a risk assessment.

it's only Grade 1” isn't a plan.

A birthday with a difference - climbing with your mates! 🧗‍♂️🎉

Hamish’s dad had a great idea for his birthday: a climbing session with his friends and a chance to try something a little different.

At @mtnspace, we take care of the equipment, safety and instruction, so you can focus on having a great experience together.

A great option for birthdays, celebrations or simply getting a group of friends outdoors and trying something new.

It was a huge pleasure delivering 2 days of Indoor to Outdoor rock climbing course for @plasybreninofficial at their annual event SheClimbs.

But why do we even need Women-Only events?

Many times I was thinking about this myself and an instructor.

Fair question.

Turns out when the fear of being judged disappears, we climb better. 95% of women report a boost in self-esteem from time outdoors. We believe it - we feel it every session.

Nobody's rushing to keep the queue moving. We fall off and get back on without feeling watched.

We take five goes at a route without wondering if we're holding anyone up.

The sense of community, the laughter, the girls' chat, creating role models - that's what two days at SheClimbs looked like. Beginners leading their first outdoor pitch. Instructors who'd once been in their shoes, showing them it's possible. Everyone cheering everyone on.

Yet we know it's not for everyone. But if 70 people think it's worthwhile, and 70 people walk away with more confidence - then we call that a success.

Some of the photos were taken by an amazing photographer @hollieharm 📸
