What if computing could help someone understand whether an old legal conviction can finally be left in the past? ⚖️

Computer Science PhD student Josh Alele-Beals is developing tools to help people and their legal advisors navigate Michigan’s Clean Slate Law, which allows eligible convictions to be expunged from public records.

The stakes are human. An old conviction can continue to affect someone’s ability to find work, secure housing, access credit, or pursue an education years later.

Josh’s approach combines AI with mathematical modeling designed to keep the legal reasoning precise, verifiable, and reproducible. Within strict guardrails, AI handles what it does well: helping people interact with the system and translating complex results into understandable language.

“The combination of a challenging technical problem and the potential to help people rebuild their lives was something I couldn’t pass up,” says Josh.

Find out how Josh got interested in the research and where it’s taking him next in a College of Computing Q&A, available now at the link in our bio. Our CyberHuskies from Houghton High School took home the State Championship in the Presidential AI Challenge!

Their winning project, AmeriQuest, uses AI image recognition to turn nature into a giant scavenger hunt, encouraging kids to get outside and get active.

Mentored by #MichiganTech College of Computing faculty and students, CyberHuskies are already proving that Tech is where you come to build things that matter.

Want to join the pack? The CyberHusky program is free for 8th graders and up with at least one coding project under their belt. 🦾

Your next two years at Michigan Tech could be covered—and lead to a career protecting the country’s digital future. 🇺🇸💻

Through the new CyberAI Corps Scholarship for Service program, eligible Huskies can receive up to two years of full-ride support, potentially covering senior year and an accelerated master’s degree.

Students pursuing bachelor’s degrees in artificial intelligence, computer science, cybersecurity, data science, information technology or software engineering may qualify. Scholarship recipients also receive mentorship, research opportunities, career preparation and potential internships.

In return, graduates put their skills to work in cybersecurity, artificial intelligence or related roles with government organizations for a period equal to their scholarship support.

If you want to use your computing skills in service of the public good, learn more at mtu.edu/sfs or email sfs@mtu.edu. Recruitment for 2027 begins in the fall semester. A photo of Rekhi Hall on Michigan Tech's campus in the late afternoon. by @mtu_computing

Meet Anwar Walid, the new executive director of Michigan Tech’s Institute for Computing and Cybersystems.

An ACM and IEEE Fellow, Walid’s experience spans Bell Labs, AI and cybersecurity research, and academia. But he’s never experienced a Keweenaw winter or the Northern Lights.

Got tips to help him make the most of these Husky Nation experiences? Drop them in the comments! 🌌⛷️

Get more info on what brought Dr. Walid to Keweenaw and his vision for the ICC at the College of Computing Newsblog, available now at the link in our bio. When BASIC is as cool as it gets. 🤓

Tag along with PhD student Tagore Kosireddy as he balances cutting-edge AI research with hands-on community service! Whether he’s making AI safe and accessible or helping local community members navigate tech, Tagore is carrying out his mission to build AI technology for good.

You’ll find Tagore and his fellow Huskies in action at the #MichiganTech BASIC (Building Adult Skills In Computing) program they host at @pldl_org on Saturdays during the academic year.

“People come in with all kinds of issues, especially with their mobile devices. A lot of them want to learn how to stay connected, whether that's sending email or using FaceTime to see their grandkids,” he says. “Others want to learn how to use new devices for things like editing photos. Most of it comes down to the everyday tasks that make their lives a little easier.”

Tagore’s research is also about making technology use easier and safer.

“Long term, I want to keep working on building safe AI for everyone—AI that helps people in their daily lives without them having to worry about their information being leaked,” he says.
