What are you doing for supper tonight Monday 10/19 at 6 ET? Join Dean Janet Callahan and Computer Science Prof. Tim Havens for Husky Bites, a free interactive Zoom webinar. Dr. Havens is director of the Michigan Tech's Institute of Computing and Cybersystems. He's also a Michigan Tech alum. Co-hosting tonight is one of Dr. Haven's former students, Hanieh Deilamsalehy, who earned her PhD in electrical engineering at Michigan Tech. She's now a machine learning researcher at Adobe. They'll be talking about "Warm and Fuzzy Machine Learning," and also Deep Learning, AI, and other stuff. Grab a bite, or just flop down on your couch. Learn something new in just 20 minutes plus Q&A. Get the full scoop and register at mtu.edu/huskybites. Got time? Join early for some extra conversation. Or catch it on FB Live right around 6 pm.

Prof. Havens, when did you first get into engineering?
“I first became an engineer at Michigan Tech in the late 90s. What really sparked my interest in what-I-do-now was my introductory signal processing courses. The material in these courses was the first stuff that really ‘spoke’ to me. I have always been a serious musician and the mathematics of waves and filters was so intuitive because of my music knowledge. I loved that this field of study joined together the two things that I really loved: music and math. And I’ve always been a computer geek. I was doing programming work in high school to make extra money; so that side of me has always led me to want to solve problems with computers. I grew up in Traverse City, Michigan, but since attending Michigan Tech, I’ve always wanted to come back to the Copper Country; so, it’s great that I was able to return to the institution that gave me the jump start in my career.”

Todd Stone, co-founder and managing director of geology at Arena Energy, will visit Michigan Tech today Thursday, Sept. 17, to deliver the First-Year Engineering Lecture to Michigan Tech’s incoming engineering majors at 6pm EDT via Zoom.

The image you see is part of a geologic schematic of Arena Energy’s first drill well in the Gulf of Mexico.

Todd Stone is an engineer, explorer, conservationist, and entrepreneur. He is a Michigan Tech alumnus (Geological Engineering '85). He is also a member of the College of Engineering Advisory Board.

Todd’s lecture is entitled "Simplicity On the Other Side of Complexity.” Registered attendees will be provided a Zoom link to attend the lecture remotely. Please register for the Zoom session at mtu.edu/ef.

Everyone is welcome (anyone who’s interested) and we hope you will join us. Todd has a great deal of sage advice and hard-earned wisdom to share.

When Todd arrived at Michigan Tech nearly 40 years ago, “It was the best and most mature decision of my young life,” he says.

“It was not difficult for me to work hard. My folks raised me that way,” he adds. “It was difficult for me to work smart.”

Todd’s lecture will outline how he learned to work smart in school and his career. He will highlight something he feels is top priority: Learning how to learn.

“At Michigan Tech you are going to learn how to learn; learn how to solve difficult technical problems logically. And that is going to change your world.”

We are grieving the tremendous loss of Dr. Roger Kieckhafer, legendary professor of computer engineering in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Michigan Tech.

He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and son. He was an inventor, engineer, researcher, educator, veteran, and valued faculty member at Michigan Technological University. He died on Friday, July 17 in a tragic vehicle-bicycle accident at age 69. Roger cared deeply for his students, his family, and his profession. The impact he had on hundreds of lives will shine on.

In the words of computer engineering faculty member Kit Cischke, “For Roger, it always boiled down to what was best for our students. The content of our classes. The things our students needed to know to get good jobs. The assignments. The kinds of things they needed to do in the real world. Students were forever contacting Roger after graduation, saying, ‘Thanks for teaching me that. I’m using it every day in my job.’”

Dr. Kieckhafer's tribute is posted at mtu.edu/engineering, on our news blog, along with a link to his obituary. Please feel free to post your own tributes and memories there, too.

As we move forward, his legacy will live on. As suggested by several people, a scholarship fund will be set up in Roger’s memory. Details to come.

@bergerwithasideofcode will be the first African American to obtain a PhD in computer science at Michigan Technological University. Her status as a racial minority had inspired her to produce research on computer science education for all. Jamie’s current work is with the Ojibwa tribe in upper Michigan. She is conducting community based research to discover how technology can be taught in a culturally respectful way, while preserving Ojibwa culture. .
