“It was literally the best four years of my life. And it went so fast.”

Congratulations to all our graduates conferred at MTU Kerry Campus last Friday. 🎓

From international students who found a home here to the lads who made the most of every gap between lectures, this is what four years at MTU looks like: lifelong friendships, mentors who became more than lecturers, and the confidence to take on whatever comes next.

Some of you told us you didn’t want to leave. The good news is you never really do. Welcome to the MTU graduate community. @mtualumninetwork

They came with a goal. They’re leaving with a lot more 🎓

We caught up with the Class of 2026 on Thursday, fresh from their conferrings at MTU Cork School of Music. CSM and MTU Crawford College of Art and Design graduates, in their own words, on what the last few years meant and what it feels like to walk out the door.

An honorary doctorate for Michael D Higgins 🎓

Former President of Ireland Michael D Higgins was conferred with an honorary doctorate by MTU yesterday at MTU Cork School of Music, in recognition of his outstanding contribution to Irish public life, the arts, culture, education and human rights.

"Former President Michael D Higgins has helped to shape how Ireland values its artists, its language and its cultural heritage. His lifelong commitment to widening access to education also reflects MTU's own mission to create opportunities, nurture talent and enable people from all backgrounds to fulfil their potential." Professor Maggie Cusack, President of MTU

Congratulations, Dr Higgins, and thank you for sharing the day with our Class of 2026.

Coming together to support digital media literacy and wellbeing.

Last Friday, 9 October, staff, students, and guests gathered at MTU Bishopstown to launch our SATLE-funded Digital Media Literacy Open Educational Resource, supported by the Higher Education Authority.

Developed collaboratively by academic and library staff, students and digital media experts, the resource helps people question what they see online, recognise misinformation and reflect on their digital wellbeing.

Professor Christine Cross opened the event by highlighting the importance of digital media literacy and wellbeing, while Colin Lowry shared the HEA/SATLE perspective and the resource’s role nationally. Keynote speaker Ciara Mulcahy Linehan explored the role universities must play in supporting these skills, and Dr Oonagh O’Brien led discussions on digital wellbeing and policy development.

A special thank you to the project team, Dr Catherine Palmer, Michelle Power, Michael Costello, Colm O’Rourke and Sarah Patterson, and to the students and expert contributors who helped shape the resource. Thank you also to everyone who contributed to the roundtable discussions and shared ideas to inform the next steps at MTU.

This week, coverage in the Irish Independent and Irish Tech News brought the resource and the research behind it to a wider audience, helping extend this important conversation beyond the university.

The resource is open to everyone. Whether you are a student, educator, parent, or simply interested in understanding the online world, we invite you to explore it, share it, and consider how it could support you or your community.

Fourth-year Management and Marketing students from MTU Kerry Campus recently visited the Coffee Pod at the Tralee International Resource Centre (TIRC) in Tralee for a real-world business challenge. The visit was arranged by Mary Carroll, Manager of TIRC Tralee, who has tasked the students with devising sales strategies to increase footfall to the Coffee Pod.

Students toured the facility, spoke with staff, and observed how customers and the wider community currently use the space. Students will now apply their marketing and management knowledge to develop practical, creative recommendations. They will present their proposals to Mary Carroll and the TIRC team later this semester.

This project provides students with valuable experience of live client work while supporting a local enterprise in growing its customer base. Many thanks again to Mary and her team, especially Nataliia Huliaieva, Alena Tatarintseva and barista Artem Mikhailov. Special thanks to Ray O’Connor Desmond, Head of Department, for supporting this project. by @mtu_ie
