Maybe it’s a little silly, and maybe there are a million other things going on in the world that make this feel sort of trivial, but it’s still kind of cool, right?

Very honored after 10+ years of @muddypawpr and 15+ in the music industry to be part of @recordingacademy New Member Class and have a role in shaping the industry and continuing to support this music community I’ve always called home. ā¤ļø

Celebrating with some of my favorite industry moments over the years (too many to list!) and my favorite song by my favorite band. The one that I first listened to almost 15 years ago back when they showed up via press release in my @infectiousmagazine inbox šŸ„¹ā¤ļø

This year marks a decade since I launched Muddy Paw PR.

Back then, I was just a kid with hot pink hair and a nose ring (which inspired our brand colors!). Since 2014, I’ve had the incredible privilege of helping artists reach their goals, from signing to labels to achieving millions of Spotify streams to just getting to play their music full-time or have it heard by a wider audience.

It’s such a privilege.

Over the past ten years, the music industry has evolved, and so have we. What started with almost exclusively blog placements has expanded to include playlists, influencers, enhanced social media efforts, and much more.

I know there’s a lot of confusion around PR and what it means in 2024. It’s not clear how PR can help indie artists or why it’s worth the investment. I get it.

Ao, it seemed like a good time to re-introduce some of our services. We’re not just putting music on blogs anymore — PR means so much more now. For ten years we’ve been getting indie musicians more fans, coveted placements, and opportunities from their ā€œdreamā€ bucket list we ask every client to make —and none of that is changing.

Here’s a quick overview of what we offer. You can find a longer post on the blog or our services page, both linked in our bio.

If you’re unsure what the right fit for you is, just fill out this form with your music, vision, and goals, and I’ll get back to you with a custom plan for next steps.

I can’t believe I’m saying this but tonight @ken_newman’s single ā€œTakenā€ will premiere on @bbcsounds / @bbcradioulster ahead of its Nov 6th release. Massive thank you to @thejohnkerr for seeing the beauty in this song and choosing to feature it.

In the music industry, it really does take a village, and having someone take a chance on you means everything. Ken and I will be eternally grateful to John and the BBC for giving ā€œTakenā€ that chance.

…and now we will continue jumping up and down in celebration for the entirety of the day (if not week).

You can tune in at 10pm GMT +1 TONIGHT for the show, with ā€œTakenā€ premiering in the second hour.

(That’s 6pm EST / 3pm PST)

With @thecivilwars vibes, this is one of my favorite songs of this year and I can’t wait for you to hear it!

Every time one of these listacles pop up— Ten Music Publicists Everyone Should Know! Five Booking Agents That Should Be on Your Radar! Ten Digital Marketing Companies Fighting for Indie Artists!—I spend hours trying to decode them. What are they doing that I’m not? Why did they make the list when I didn’t? Am I falling behind? Can I do better?

So when a recent edition of this list started floating around, I got into my usual routine. Researching the companies to see what they had that I didn’t. Trying to figure out their secret sauce. But the truth?

There are some good companies on that list. And there are some that I have no idea if they’re good or bad but they appear impressive. They have the follower count and the results to back up why they made the list. (Is this comforting? Even on the business side of things, we’re not immune from being judged and rewarded based on our social media numbers.)

And look, I think it’s healthy for me to pay attention to lists like this. I never want to get left behind, and the music industry is always changing. So, since I was going down this rabbit hole anyway, I thought I’d make an article of it.

What are the top music publicity companies doing differently? And how many of these things is Muddy Paw PR also doing?

I see it all the time.

Young artists, old business model. Clinging to a past where the industry felt more structured and formulaic. If you had talent and worked hard, you could make it! Or at least, that’s how it felt.

For a long time, we’ve known this doesn’t work. It’s not enough to show up every night on stage (or online) and wait for A&R to scoop you up. But it’s also not enough to simply release music, go on tour, and put in the work.

Frankly, we’re in a bit of a wild west for what does and doesn’t work when it comes to longevity, and that can feel frustrating. So what’s an indie artist to do?

Swipe through or visit our Substack (link in bio) for the full list of tips and tricks.

šŸ‘‰ New on Substack! Five music marketing strategies for independent musicians.

I’m a broken record for creative marketing strategies, and over the years, I’ve become attuned to what works for finding fans, but also, how to have FUN with it. Because that’s important, right? You want to actually enjoy this career you’re working so hard to build.

For this article, I thought about looking for different artists for each of the five strategies. Maybe I will next time. But in the end, I honestly felt like no one does it better or more consistently than Canadian favorites (and personal favorites, of course), @arkellsmusic

And I feel like that consistency is important when it comes to longevity in the music industry.

Another thing I appreciate? Their marketing manages to reach new audiences and make legacy fans feel specialĀ at the same time.Ā I always feel like I’m part of an inside joke when Arkells do something to subtly promote new music, but I also know they’re reaching a ton of new fans at the same time. Not easy to do.

Subscribers to the Muddy Paw PR Substack will find the post in their inboxes now, or you can read via the link in my bio. :)

Happy St Patrick’s Day! šŸ€ Somehow my mind made the hop, skip, and leap from green to envy (makes sense, right??) and got me thinking about this subject. Envy in the music industry and how to use it to your advantage.

Full blog is in our bio, and up on Substack now. When it comes to jealousy, are you someone who gets motivated by it or the opposite?

I’m a big fan of micro moments. The reality is we spend soooo much time trying to curate all these perfect posts but really, no one cares (or so it feels!) I started experimenting with these intentional but low pressure micro moments for myself and my artists a while ago and I feel like it really helps with consistency and taking the pressure off.

What do you think? Are micro moments easier to capture and share or do you prefer highly curated experiences?

As a millennial, I still remember the early days of AOL and that beautiful, blissful squeal that came right beforeĀ YOU’VE GOT MAIL!

There was the dark side of the internet—chat rooms, perverts, and the chain mail that I was terrified to receive but always opened. But there was also the beauty of something new unfolding right before our eyes. Neopets and Geocities and so much Flash.

But magic fades, and novelty wears off, and we adapt. We’ve gotten so accustomed to the World Wide Web that we can’t imagine a moment without it.Ā YOU’VE GOT MAILĀ is no longer pride, but punishment. And where we once agonized over which allotted hour we’d spend online, we now can’t manage a twenty-minute power outage alone with our thoughts.

The problem is, the internet was supposed to bring us together and help us find our tribes. But actually, it’s made it harder than ever.

I wrote about this on Substack and what indie musicians can do to counteract it. Full post is on Substack, linked in the bio.

It started when I read a Substack about record labels in 2026 and ended when I wrote my own Substack about my craving for physical spaces for music, for me, for you, for community, for Muddy Paw PR and what that looks like in 2026.

I traced the roots of this desire and if it’s even possible throughout this look at the music landscape. Is there even an appetite for things like this beyond this one millennial publicist? Or are we all just chronically online now?

Signed, an introvert who was surprised to learn this about herself!
