A beautiful way to honor the 2 yr anniversary this past weekend of Helene's devastating impact to our area. It was a bittersweet moment to share together remembering all we went thru in the immediate aftermath while recognizing how far we've come and knowing we are still deep in the recovery from it.

It still amazes me this bridge survived while one just a few miles further downstream didn't. That shallow tame gentle river was 27ft high wall of raging water. I think the 100 carved pumpkins we put on it every Halloween might have helped it hold strong.

I think we all have a forever scar on us from Helene just like the one it created on Celo Knob that overlooks our valley. I see it every time I leave my house...a symbol of the power of mother nature to radically change & alter the landscape & lives in many unimaginable ways...that we're all still navigating thru as best we can...while keeping keenly aware of new storms on the horizon.

I made my own homage to the storm in our woods with the stump from the only tree that fell on our property during it. I put the few random things on it from our Sunday river cleanups we did here in the many months after the storm. Those cleanups became my therapy/exercise/church to heal & process by helping restore this lovely pristine river valley we live in.

It's still incredibly heartbreaking 2yrs later to recall it all & to still be witnessing the ongoing recovery to repair all the damage, remove debris & replace what was lost. I'm forever grateful to all those who showed up to help & are still helping. I never knew there were so many styles & colors of dump trucks.

“I get bored easily,” admits Bridget Fox, a confession that echoes through every ceramic oddity at her Celo, North Carolina, shop and studio, Mudventions. Step inside the Yancey County gallery and you’ll find a cabinet of natural curiosities: touch-reactive lamps that mimic bioluminescence, whimsical rattles inspired by seed pods, and her most popular attraction: a small army of hand-glazed ceramic brains.

We sat down with Bridget for an interview, where she talks about
how her background in painting shapes her glazing techniques, how she keeps her brain - both literal and ceramic - firing on all cylinders, and why every kiln firing still feels like Christmas morning.

Bridget's work is also included in ArtsvilleUSA's memento mori-themed fall exhibition, "Body of Work."

This alchemical surprise is the magical moment part of the whole process that keeps me hooked! If only I could make it happen more often...maybe if I didn't spend sooo much time on the details, lol. And make more than I can fit in my magic hot box. That top shelf was an insanely long Jenga puzzle to squeeze all the must haves in for the Toe River Studio Tour this weekend.

Here's a few of the gems to entice you to come on an adventure to the wild & creative WNC mountains. And a peek at my new light sculpture display that I'm already outgrowing, lol. And an almost brainy heart rattle pod kiln casualty.

Almost time for the Toe River Studio Tour here happening June 5 - 7. If you're looking for a change of scenery & some time away from the suck of the digital screen come enjoy an inspiring weekend in the beauty filled mountains of WNC. I've been glazing away & will have lots of illuminating new creations and brainy, planty, mushroomy things.

We've all been digging deep to keep our creative juices flowing while navigating the neverending but always steadily progressing recovery here. Hope you can come support & enjoy our efforts as everyone here could use it!

And yeah it's definitely deeply conflicting to be promoting something that requires gas consumption in these times. What are the odds I would just happen to breeze thru the auction area at the Habitat Restore in Asheville and spy an old morel rattle of mine?!? And just happen to win it back, lol!

I honestly have only been to Asheville a handful of times in the past year since I don't have to go down there once a month like I used to pre Helene to restock my work there. And only been in the Restore once since they reopened. And I usually don't pay much attention to the auction area. And it just so happened that the auction ended the next day. So for some crazy reason I decided to put the next high bid down and hope no one came back to scoop it when it went live at the end.

And now it's mine again along with the other 2 interesting artifacts next to it! I figured out from old photos it was actually one I made at the Energy Exchange that was in my first exciting landfill gas firing there....go garbage gas 🙌

And yeah it feels a little weirdly insane to be buying my work back, lol. Especially when I haven't actually been selling much. But dang what a super crazy timed coincidence to so randomly stumble upon it & be lucky enough to bid to win?!?! 🤯 Happy morel hunting, lol!

So yeah unfortunately not what I wanted to be sharing as re-entry post into the SM sphere. There's some real lucky breaks to it but overall the past week of dealing with the fallout from it added a stressful suck pile to our plate. Glad it wasn't any worse!

I happened to be home when it hit & luckily in the basement. I actually thought from the loud boom it made that Eric ran into the house with car coming home. And luckily it didn't take out any vehicles, just dinged our van. Somehow it managed to get our porch roof on other side. But luckily it didn't smash our glass greenhouse on back. And it stopped raining snowing after it fell. AND we can remain in our house. And yes we have insurance.

AND, AND luckily we have GREAT tree removal guys here, Affordable Tree Care. They craned it off, cleaned it up & helped us tarp it just in time before the next nasty storm system came thru. Thankfully their crane truck just fit in our drive! One guy rode on top of tree as the crane removed it, singing. Highly recommend them, and also checking your trees, especially so if you live in WNC. This one wasn't on our radar as being a danger. It was a double tree that split at ground level. One of them rotted at base but still living up top. And the weather that day wasn't anything as bad as other storms we've had... Just took one good gust in wet weather. We're all pretty damn conscious of them here. And lastly...SO VERY glad we're almost out of winter!

Come enjoy a Halloween trip thru our Intergalactic Portal at the Shops at Celo on your journey to the pumpkins on the Celo bridge! Quick lil peak of my booth at the Mint Show in Charlotte today. Lots of fantastic pottery & ceramics to check out & adopt by mud workers from all over NC! Goes till 4pm.

Big thanks to all who came out for the kick off party last night. Nice to have a festive distraction from how exhausted I was from a hot & humid set up. This mountain girl has lost a lot of her heat conditioned GA blood, lol.

Packing up my new favorite light pieces for the Potters Market at the Mint Museum in Charlotte NC this Sat Sept 27. I gots lots of illuminating creations...along with all the other ones...brains, mermaid, rattles & ornaments. More info on show @pottersmarketatthemint
