With early corn harvest and recent moisture, many Missouri producers are noticing volunteer corn emerging in harvested fields and asking the same question: Is it safe to graze? Volunteer corn and corn residue can be an economical forage source and help stretch hay supplies, but nitrate accumulation can pose a risk. Concerns are greatest following drought stress, excessive nitrogen applications or cold weather events. Click on the link in our bio to learn how nitrates develop in forage crops and how to properly collect a sample for testing. #ExtendMU #MissouriAgriculture #Cattle #ForageManagement #LivestockManagement #CornResidue #AgEducation #2XAg2030 by @muextension
Part 2: How to Cold Stratify Seeds A couple of weeks ago, we explained why some perennial flower and native plant seeds need a period of cold stratification before they can germinate. Now, we're showing you an easy way to mimic winter conditions right in your backyard. Using pots and garden soil, you can give seeds the cold, moist environment they need while keeping them organized and ready for spring. It's a simple, low-maintenance technique that works with nature to improve germination for many species. Watch for step-by-step instructions, and stay tuned this spring when we'll show you what to do once those first seedlings begin to emerge. #GardeningTips #NativePlants #SeedStarting #ColdStratification #PerennialFlowers #WinterSowing #GardenTok #MissouriGardening #GrowYourOwn #ExtendMU by @muextension

As temperatures cool, you may notice more stink bugs trying to move indoors. Brown marmorated stink bugs are searching for warm places to spend the winter. While they can be a nuisance, they don't bite, sting or spread disease. Keep them out this fall: • Seal cracks and gaps around doors, windows and utility openings. • Check that openings are sealed after removing window air conditioners. • Trim vegetation near your home's foundation and clean up yard debris where insects can hide. • Vacuum up any stink bugs that make their way inside. A few prevention steps now can help keep these unwelcome guests outdoors all winter. #BugBeat #ExtendMU #HomeMaintenance #FallTips #StinkBugs #InsectManagement by @muextension

Autumn leaves may look beautiful on trees, but once they pile up in the yard, they can create problems for lawns and landscape plants. Thick layers of leaves can block sunlight, trap moisture and increase the risk of disease. The good news? Those fallen leaves are also a valuable source of organic matter and nutrients that can be recycled right back into your landscape. Two easy ways to recycle fall leaves: • Mulch them into your lawn with a mower. • Add them to a compost pile to create a nutrient-rich soil amendment. By recycling leaves instead of throwing them away, you can improve soil structure, help retain moisture and return valuable nutrients to the landscape. Recent rains may have greened up pastures, but they can also raise the risk of prussic acid poisoning in cattle and horses. Rainfall after drought conditions can cause young regrowth of Johnsongrass and other sorghum species that can contain toxic compounds that release prussic acid. To help reduce risk, MU Extension specialists recommend waiting to graze these forages until they reach about 24 inches tall and providing hay or grain before turnout so animals are less likely to overconsume potentially toxic plants. Signs of prussic acid poisoning can develop quickly and may include rapid breathing, muscle tremors, excessive salivation, staggering and collapse. If you suspect poisoning, contact your veterinarian immediately. Looking for a lower-sugar Halloween? Here's a fun idea to try. Halloween candy is part of the fun, but it can add up quickly. If you'd like to cut back on the post-Halloween sugar overload, consider starting a Switch Witch tradition. Children choose a portion of their candy to leave out overnight and "trade" it for a small surprise, such as a book, craft kit or coloring activity. It's a simple way to keep the excitement of Halloween going while helping reduce the amount of candy around the house. What would your child choose from the Switch Witch? Click on the link in our bio to learn more ways to make a Halloween a little healthier this year. #HealthyHalloween #FamilyNutrition #HealthyKids #ExtendMU by @muextension
