“We didn’t have money. We had people.”

That’s probably the simplest way I can explain how Local came to life.
I’m a filmmaker by profession. My cousin brother, Noufal, is part of this journey too. We also come from a family that has been in advertising for over four decades. Somewhere along the way, our work kept bringing us stories of people and artisans who were doing incredible things but rarely getting the visibility or marketplace they deserved.

The idea for Local actually began almost fourteen years ago.
Whenever we travelled, we rarely cared about reaching the destination. We took random routes, met artisans, discovered people making beautiful things in remote places, and kept wondering: Why aren’t these products reaching more people?
That’s where the idea of creating a fair marketplace began.

Our first experiment was much smaller. We were living in a joint family with sixteen or seventeen people, most of them women, who cooked, baked, made soaps, dishwashing liquids and all kinds of things at home. We thought, Why not make a little extra and try selling it?
We started with food, delivering it ourselves to neighbours. Then came the thought: why should it stop at food? Why not candles, soaps, crafts, clothing and everything else people make at home?
Eventually, that became Local Sustainable Living.
We wanted the name itself to say what we stood for local and sustainable.

But sustainability, to me, has never meant only the environment.
There are three kinds of sustainability we think about: environmental, social and economic.

For our first sustainable festival, we received around 120 applications and shortlisted around 25 vendors who were locally and independently making their products.
We had no marketing budget. No big production team.
But we had people.
We put out a simple video saying, We’re preparing for a sustainable festival. If you want to help, come.
Six or seven people showed up.
Then more came.

I’ve taken some of my favourite people to this little island over the years, and every time I go back, it feels just as good.

It’s so close to home, yet somehow feels like a little escape from everything. Just paddling through the river, being around nature, and spending unhurried time with my people.

There’s something about floating on the water that makes me feel alive. Maybe it’s the quiet, the river, or simply having the right people around. The conversations, laughter, long silences, and days that didn’t need a plan.

And my people who haven’t been here yet, I’ll save a paddle for you. 💫

we basically figured that cars choose to rant as well instead of going to therapy. Totally natural. Made a bunch of fun little films for @tata.evofficial and this one was the quickest shoot (for obv reasons) and our favourite.

conceptualised and directed a bunch of super quick films for @tata.evofficial in what we can now call our favourite place to shoot in, kochi. The people, the culture, the food and the city lending itself as a character makes this an extremely beautiful place to do what we love. Here are just a few films out of the lot, and one from back in 2024, which I never got around to uploading. My friends say i need to post more work on my feed, so here’s an attempt in that direction. Always w my best @dhruv.bachan . It’s the sweetest privilege to work with friends.

And all this was made possible by the OG team, @minalsaraf @whataaamelon @yeriikkk who are also always with us in the search of banger meals the moment we land in kochi.
