Last month Muni Diaries turned 18 and we celebrated with stories of “Growing with Muni” 🥹. Our Haiku Champion got a cap and gown and Muni Diaries founder, Tara Ramroop, became Muni Diaries Valedictorian and earned her Doctor of Muni degree (a very prestigious honor)! In her Valedictorian speech she shared,

“This valedictorian speech isn’t a farewell, but rather an invitation to keep going. To remember that you do have a story to tell, yes, you—everyone does. To keep riding the bus and demanding a public transit system worthy of this Victorian city and its cast of characters. It’s your money and it’s the public’s transit! To remember that sharing space with strangers won’t be the worst thing that can happen to you today. In fact, it could be the best.”

Muni Diaries has grown and changed over the years, but at its core Muni Diaries is always you, the everyday transit riders willing to share your stories. You help show us and each other that we are more connected than we know, more alike than we are different, and forever and always live in the best city in the whole damn world.

Here’s to many more years of sharing your stories. All aboard!

To share your transit story send us a DM here, or shoot us an email munidiariessf@gmail.com

Once upon a time there was a Muni project! Muni tested a double-decker bus on San Francisco streets from December 2007 to January 2008. Riders could even ride it for free during the pilot.

FUN FACTS:

• It had 83 seats, compared with about 55–57 on Muni’s articulated buses.

• It was only 40 feet long, despite carrying more seated passengers.

• 85% of surveyed riders preferred the view from the double-decker.

• It handled San Francisco’s hills just fine. The bigger issue was overhead clearance.

• It averaged about 3.5 MPG, compared with roughly 2.3 MPG for Muni’s articulated diesel buses at the time.

• This wasn’t Muni’s first double-decker experiment, they had also tested one in 1990.

So why didn’t Muni keep it? Slower boarding, short average passenger trips, clearance issues, and maintenance facilities that weren’t designed for 14-foot-tall buses ultimately made articulated buses a better fit.

Would you ride one if Muni brought them back? #BayAreaForever

What a ride! 🚋❤️

Thank you to everyone who joined us for Muni Heritage Weekend and helped celebrate the vehicles, stories and people that have kept San Francisco moving for generations.

Mayor Daniel Lurie, joined by local elected officials, kicked off the weekend by ringing our motorized cable car bell.

Throughout the weekend, riders hopped aboard vintage buses and streetcars, explored the Historic Bus Promenade, enjoyed activities for all ages, visited the Muni Store pop-up and celebrated more than a century of Muni history.

Director of Transportation Julie Kirschbaum and her son Esa shared their love for Muni, while riders added their own stories to our Muni Memories activation—showing how deeply Muni is woven into the lives of San Franciscans.

A special thank-you to our partners at the San Francisco Railway Museum/Market Street Railway, Muni Diaries, SF City FC and Western Railway Museum for helping us bring the weekend to life.

Thanks for riding through history with us. See you next year! taken in San Francisco, California by @munidiaries

Chris Arvin (@chrisarvinsf) is a familiar face at Muni Diaries Live after years of selling their whimsical Transit Supply (@transitsupply) wares, giving witty presentations on Muni’s history and its famous boat tram, and hosting interactive transit trivia. But how does a kid from a New Hampshire suburb become a San Francisco transit microcelebrity? At our 2025 Wayfinding Show, Chris took the stage to tell us: how learning about the transit service we lost led to fighting for what we still have, how an online following of transit enthusiasts led to real life community, and how that community powered a scrappy but mighty fight for transit funding. For Chris, Muni has truly been the friends they made along the way.

Listen to their story now at the 🔗 in our bio!
